Let’s just make sure we’re all up to date with the story of Brian ‘Head’ Welch, shall we?

Boy meets other boys. Boys form band. Band helps kick start trendsetting but later much-derided music genre. Band gets big. Band gets stratospheric big. Boys celebrates by getting off their tits on drink and drugs and porn star wives. Boy gets addicted to bad lifestyle choices. Boy finds God. Boy quits band. Boy bitches about Band. Band bitches about boy. Boy writes book about God. Boy makes up with band although does not rejoin. Boy writes another book about God. Boy makes solo album.

Which is where we come in for this, the painfully-titled Save Me From Myself.

If we didn’t already know it was because of the Big Man upstairs, after listening to Save Me From Myself, you sure as shit know that Head didn’t quit KoRn because of ‘musical differences’.

From the Jonathan Davis-copycat vocals, right down to the Nursery rhyme breakdowns, this record sees every half-cocked KoRn-ism have any remaining spark of imagination panel-beaten out of it. What we’re left with is a paper-thin facsimile of KoRn’s earlier output, with one even more tragic flaw.

Head’s riotously literal lyrics veer from the nascently banal to hilariously lacking any self-awareness. “Flush! / All the puke i’m throwing UP! / In the toilet, this SUCK! / not a part of growing UP”, he alternately wails and croaks through ‘Flush’, disregarding subtley with all the grace and charm of a Born-Again doorstepper.

Head doesn’t just spell out precisely what concrete-thick message he’s trying to send, but writes it in the lyrical equivalent of giant red capital letters, with underlining just for good measure. While Brian ’Head’ Welch is probably eager to proselytise the story of his fall and subsequent redemption, it’s hard to see why anyone – and especially anyone with a modicum of taste – could care less.

If you thought the knuckle-dragging Fieldy’s Dreams was the lowest ebb of KoRn-related solo works, then Save Me From Myself is going to be forehead-slappingly dimwit revelation. Amen.

-3/6

You are an idiot. This is a great album in my opinion. By saying that anyone could care less about his story was a dick move. I can assure that you have probably never had to deal with a thing as hard as drug addiction. Then, to top it off, get your life back together.

You are truly narrow minded. This is a great album and a great inspiration. It is great to see a musician recover and come back from drug addiction when it claims so many lives.

This is an old article, however, I’m going to still have to disagree with it. While it matches KoRn so much, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It still brings it’s own flavor to the table and actually gives christians a good name, especially with the song “Die Religion Die,” which focused on how man-made religion is tearing youth from following christ. I’m no religious fanatic, but even I can see through the message and agree, rather than being so narrow minded that I have to trash on someone who is actually trying to do some good. This album is for the christians who don’t go around belittling and judging people who don’t think like them. This is for the people who are looking for something that doesn’t complain about my girlfriend left me and I want to die…This is for the people who want to listen to something that might have a dark, foreboding message, but then switches back up to also share the light. Amen.

I think you have more of a problem with his message than his music. The album has got good reviews from other critics. As someone else has said you’re narrow minded.

Rubbish review, this album is great!

Hugh Platt, how on earth did you get this job? You are a terrible critic/writer.

  • 8 Hugh // Oct 9, 2009 at 10:33 am

Guanjyn, how on earth did Brian “Head” Welch ever convince someone to put out his solo album? He is a terrible songwriter/musician.

I think, that you really are narrow minded in what you see. If you take a view from another perspective this album has meaning. Think before you write next time.

  • 10 Hugh // Oct 25, 2009 at 9:09 am

I can imagine no perspective where anyone could seriously enjoy this album. Anyone who likes this album should stop buying music and seek professional help.

    Great Reivew!
I think you should call it:

Save me from this guy’s shit music.

If Head’s album is doing so great, why did he ask KoRn to take him back?

If you read what “Actually” happened you’d understand.
The only reason you don’t like this is because of the Christian content I’m guessing.

  • 14 Hugh // Nov 4, 2009 at 2:44 am

The only reason I didn’t like this was the leaden, literal and ham-fisted lyricism. Oh, and the tired, repetitive knock-off riffs that sound like they were cast-offs from the ‘Folllow The Leader’ sessions. And that face-palm of a video he made. Or the depth of unoriginality that strikes this record so deeply that “Head” even mimics Jonathan Davies’ vocal style.

    Take your pick.

    Hi Hugh,

Sorry, you are really bad reviewer, I am KoRn, fan/supporter from their album Issues(Till the ”Head” braked up from the band), and I’m ”only” 21, if your good at math, That means – that they are one of my favorite bands of all time(In my list are bands such as Radiohead, The Strokes, Depeche Mode, Recoil, and… Brian…), if you think that I should stop buying music, because I have a huge respect to ”Head” then you are just one of the worst reviewers of all time, or you just reviewing for publicity, at least have some respect for other people. He gave me motivation to stop drinking and smoking and I am 100% shure that I am not only one, whom he helped with his recent work. I am 50/50 atheist, because, I don’t believe that their could be made life from rock, water, and wind within even billion years. 50/50? I don’t know, thats why 50/50. But still there can’t be made something out of nothing!

I hope that you are just doing it for publicity. God will be your judge.

P.S Sorry for my bad English, I’m from Latvia.

  • 17 violator // Nov 11, 2009 at 7:26 pm

I hope your kids will get hooked on drugs and you will be raped with BBC(Big Black C*ck) you retard… If I would meet you in reallity I would brake your F-ing head open. And that is no bullshit you prick!

There is no point in having discusion with you – you are so F* ignorant. You do relise that ”how many people, so many opinions. Bye and I hope you will change your narrow minded mind otherwise I wish you a cancer.

Racism, homophobia AND hypocrisy, all in same comment? LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE HAVE OURSELVES A WINNER!

  • 19 oma // Mar 7, 2010 at 11:25 pm

hugh you’re just being a bitch saying this album sucks.. I’m a big KoЯn fan and i’m still trying to figure how you could compare this album to KoЯn’s earlier albums, were you on something (drugs maybe?) when you listened to save me from myself… Ok, the lyrics suck in one or two song but overall this album is better than KoЯn’s last two albums… Go get yourself Laid and stop being a bitch

  • 20 Jeff // Mar 12, 2010 at 1:20 am

Okay, really? I dug the album, not going to lie. Not amazing, but not bad. You can tell his heart was in the right place, he just really needs to get a handle on some lyrics. Now, that my opinion is out of the way, who gives a shit if Hugh doesn’t like it or not? If you like it, fine, go listen to it, if you don’t then whatever, but do we really need to bash people because their opinions differ? I though the review was well written. He didn’t like it, and clearly expressed why he didn’t. That’s what reviews are all about, right?
