2008 into 2009: Malefice

Malefice are one of British heavy metal’s great hopes for the next few years. Basically, they’re dead good, bloody love their metal (especially the Download Festival part of it) and vocalist Dale Butler, does not like Kid Rock.

What was your highlight of 2008?
Playing Download 2008, dude. Literally lived a dream that day. Thank you to all the people that came out early and bled for us! It was insane!

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Probably crashing our van on tour in September. It wasn’t that bad – nobody was hurt – but it kept us off the road for four days. Bear in mind we had been in the studio recording the new album for about three to four months, so we were eager to be out playing. It sucked.

Who in 2008 deserves a good kicking?
I’ve been informed by my management that I have to be diplomatic here. Anyone that knows me will know that’s nearly impossible. However, Kid Rock at Download this year – what a knobhead. Not playing and storming off because he thinks he’s bigger than the festival. Does he know that Donington is the Graceland of metal? And does he realise he upset 30,000 people that were looking forward to bottling him for 40 minutes? On your newly refurbished country and western bike, son!

Who had the best comeback: Metallica, AC/DC, or Guns N’ Roses?
Metallica, of course. Death Magnetic was an incredible album. I caught their set at Reading festival as well, I’ve seen them about nine times and never before had they been this good! AC/DC latest album bored me if I’m honest, and Guns N’ Roses have never been too hot in my eyes!

What are you most looking forward to in 2009?
Touring my ass off and everyone being able to finally hear our new album. Honestly, I’ve never been excited about anything as much in my life. We’ve created a monster!

What band should everyone find out about in 2009?
Malefice. We’ve worked our fingers to the bones over the past few years to get to this point. We’re finally in the place we wanted to be, and I know with Metal Blade now in our corner we can go toe to toe with the heavyweights in ‘09!

What do you want for Christmas?
Download ‘09 Main Stage slot would be lovely. Let’s see if that fat, red-suited, beardy “Yo ho ho”-ing git can get that down the chimney!

Who do you want to get under the mistletoe?
Our merch guy, Scott. I’m not gay.

Where will you be on New Year’s Eve?
Somewhere in Reading, laying face down in a puddle of my own sick.

Malefice will release their second album, Dawn Of Reprisal through Metal Blade on 27 February 2009 in some places like Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. If you’re still European but don’t live in those countries, get the record on 02 March 2009. Seriously, get it.
