2008 into 2009: Unearth

The mighty Derek Kerswill, drummer of the equally mighty Unearth seems to have had a fantastic year of playing lots of music and is looking forward to even more of the same. Read exactly what he has to say about 2008.

What was your highlight of 2008?
Definitely releasing the new Unearth record, The March. Playing Russia and Wacken Fest with Iron Maiden was pretty bitchin! Ozzfest with Kingdom of Sorrow was amazing too! Been a great year for me.

What’s the worst thing that happened to you in 2008?
Honestly, I’m thinking that doing dead lifts, backstage before a show in Danville, Virginia and pulling my back out four days before the end of tour was the worst thing that happened. It was four of the longest days of my life, but I pushed through the shows and made it happen.

Who in 2008 deserves a good kicking?
That’s a good question. Maybe ignorant idiots sitting behind their computers posting stupid shit online. They all deserve a good kicking. Some people are jealous, bored and lonely. They should get a life.

Who had the best comeback: Metallica, AC/DC, or Guns N’ Roses?
Well, I’d never hate on AC/DC – but I don’t think they made a “comeback”. They just put out another AC/DC record. G’n’R is a friggin’ joke, but I’ll give props to Metallica for pushing themselves to put out something pretty damn heavy. It’s distractingly sloppy at times, but it’s worth listening to.

What are you most looking forward to in 2009?
Well, it’s all things Unearth for me moving forward, so I am very excited about our Australian Soundwaves tour we’re doing, and I’m sure we’ll end up with something killer this summer. Just trying to preach the metal gospel and take things to a new level. Maintain some genuine inspiration and find a balance with family and music. It’s tough, but we’re making it work.

What band should everyone find out about in 2009?
Hands down, without a doubt, Architects, from Brighton, England! They are the perfect mixture of Cave In meets Refused meets a punch in the side of the head! They have a new record coming out on Century Media in January called Hollow Crown. I was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy and it’s fucking brilliant! Please check out this band immediately! Their live shows are intense, too.

What do you want for Christmas?
Time with my wife and family, so I have already received my present! We’re off for the next four weeks through the holiday. Life is good.

Who do you want to get under the mistletoe?
Sexy time.

Where will you be on New Year’s Eve?
Playing a show with my good friends from Boston called Waltham. It’s just going to be a bunch of great friends playing great music and enjoying the night! I’m so thankful to be able to play music as much as I do.
