Top 5: Biffy Clyro – Simon Neil chooses his Top 5 Rock Eccentrics

Biffy Clyro singer/guitarist Simon Neil took the time to have a chat with Anne Waites about his Top 5 favourite eccentrics in the world of rock. We agreed that there are a lot and that beards are very important.

Rivers Cuomo, Weezer
“He went through the huge beard phase, tried to deconstruct the technique of writing a pop song, sat in his room painted black for three years, realised he didn’t want to do it and now he plays soccer and he’s letting the other guys in the band write songs. He’s probably my favourite eccentric ever.”

Axl Rose, Guns N’ Roses
“Total genius! I think I’m the only person in the world that still rates Axl Rose. I’m mega excited about the new Guns N’ Roses album. He’s the only person that could spend 50 million dollars of a record label’s money. That’s something brilliant in my eyes. It’s shaped up to be a corking record.”

Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys
“He built the sandpit to put his piano in, and he just lost his tiny little mind. I love the romantic aspect of the album Smile. I just loved that he was making a teenage symphony to god, which he just couldn’t quite get his head round because he was fucked up.”

Nick Cave
“His novel ‘And The Ass Saw The Angel’ is an incredible book. He’s really quite a renaissance man. He wrote the music to ‘The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford’, which is beautiful. He did his Grinderman project with the ‘No Pussy Blues’. He’s a rock legend who got off his face on heroin in Berlin [in the 1980s], and now he gets up at nine and writes songs until five o’clock, and he doesn’t seem to have any idea how bizarre that is, which is cool as fuck.”

MC Hammer
“He was buying gold toilet seats like they were going out of fashion! Then he went completely bankrupt. He wrote one of the best pop tunes ever and sampled ‘Super Freak’ by Rick James, and now he’s this mad reverend dude. The fools that go and see someone like MC Hammer and believe he’s speaking the word of god. The guy that was buying gold toilet seats and was saying he was too legit to quit is fucking trying to tell you about god, it’s ridiculous.”
