With The Defiled supporting Deathstars on their UK tour in April, we thought it high time we caught up with frontman, Stitch D, and bassist, Drex Exel, to see what else the London industro-glam metallers have got planned for ’09.
How did you meet?
Stitch: Me and Drex met at a shop we worked at in Camden, and we went through hundreds of members before we actually had this line-up. We’re currently on drummer number 11, but he was originally drummer number 10 who just rejoined. Another previous drummer is now our keyboard player, and our old keyboard player is now our guitar player. It’s kinda messed up.
What made you want to start a band?
Stitch D: Nirvana, Rolling Stones and The Cult
Exel: Guns n Roses, Bon Jovi and Meatloaf
What was it like growing up in Kent and the Isle of Wight?
Exel: In Kent there was no metal scene at all growing up just rude-boys in Vauxhall Novas. I got out of there as soon as I could.
Stitch D: I loved growing up on the Isle of Wight, all I did was smoke weed and play guitar, but if you wanna make a career outta making music then it’s not the best place in the world. There was only one music venue that played good music, and no A&R guy would cross the sea to come to a show!
What bands do you consider as part of your scene or as your peers?
Stitch D: To be honest we don’t fit in with any bands at the moment. We’re too faggy looking for the metalheads, and we’re too heavy for the glam and punk kids! We’re just trying to start our own little scene rather than fit in anywhere else.

You’re going on tour with Deathstars. Will it be your longest tour? How have you prepared?
Exel: It’s the biggest stretch we’ve done without a day off, so spending 15 days in a van with 5 sweaty men is going to be an experience. This is all any of us have ever wanted to do for a living though, so we’re all pretty stoked about getting the opportunity to do it.
What’s the best or funniest show you’ve played?
Exel: We played a gig in Reading around the time we first started out where the promoter was a proper crack-head, running around with a baseball bat hitting our equipment. We ended up getting twatted before we went on, and me and Stitch ended up plugging our guitars into each others’ (thinking we’d plugged them into our amps). It took us a good 5 minutes to work out why they weren’t working. For the whole gig I had a fat moose of a girl grinding up and down my leg, and I wouldn’t imagine we sounded too pretty either. We definitely made a pact after that to never get that pissed before playing again.
What have you got planned for your album/the future?
Exel: We’ve finished recording our debut EP, 1888. It’s loosely themed around Jack the Ripper. We’re a London band and it’s hard not to be drawn in by the imagery of our city’s heritage. I think that’s the joy of being in a metal band – you can theme you’re your music around the most ridiculous subjects and still get away with it, and you don’t get that with any other genre. We’re working on a release date for it at the moment but nothing is set in stone as of yet.
What other band should everyone find out about?
Exel: My musical tastes change on a daily basis but at the moment I’ve been listening to a band called Hour Of The Wolf from the States who pretty rad, Kruger from Switzerland and Zozobra.
1888, the debut EP from The Defiled will be released later this year. For now, make sure you check them out when they come to a venue near you, or go check them out on their MySpace page.
