Eight more bands announced for Download Festival 2009

The latest download announcement is something of a mixed bag – on the plus side, we have confirmation of an appearance by the mighty Opeth, who are every bit as prog as Mastodon but without the burden of a million desperate hipsters trailing in their wake. Even better is the news that the tech-metal skills of Meshuggah will be returning to the UK to flip Donington Park on its head. The downside is Lawnmower Deth – a joke band that wasn’t even funny the first time around – have also been booked to play.

Also joining the bill are Duff McKagen’s Loaded (okay, technically they are just called Loaded, but if we didn’t mention the Velvet Revolver/ex-G’n'R connection, you’d all be asking who they are), Japanese weirdos Dir En Grey, nu-metal revivalists (you know we’re right) in the form of Five Finger Death Punch, So-Cal wannabes You Me At Six, and Steadlür, the latest signing to the Roadrunner Records stable.

Hugh, it's because they're not hipsterish enough for you, you big hipster gaylord.
  • awesome!
  • Opeth are one of those bands *should* love - they tick all my musical boxes, but for some reason they just bore me a little bit.

Meshuggah on the other hand. OH YES PLEASE.
  • Nothing that special for me, Opeth will be cool to watch. YM@6 are an awful band though, hope they're not on the main stage..or even the second stage for that matter.

Awesome announcement, discounting You Me At SIx. Not sure about Dir En Grey and Steadlur, will have to check them out. But all the other bands are definitely worth watching.

And you are dead wrong about Lawnmower Deth. Whether you find them funny or not, it doesn't mean they don't thrash like a beast. Have you even taken the time to listen to 'Urban Surfer 125' and 'Flying Killer Cobs...', etc. etc.?. You can guarantee numerous circle pits during their half-hour or however long they get. And it WILL be one of the highlights of the weekend - behind Faith No More, Down, Journey and Meshuggah, of course!
