There’s no denying it – 2009 looks like it’s going to be a good year for the Big Four. If you’re suffering from an epic brain-fail, and don’t already know who they are, The Big Four are the quartet of bands who helped define Thrash Metal as we know it – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. But who amongst them is tr00ly still shredding it like they were in 1985?
Metallica are back at the top of the world, with Death Magnetic winning back the fans they lost with St Anger, a phenomenally successsful world tour underway, and the headline spot at the Sonisphere Festivals still to come. Joining them at Sonisphere will be another of the Big Four, Anthrax. Things are going pretty good for them too right now – they recently played the biggest of their career in Colombia (Scott Ian told MetalHammer.co.uk all about it), with new vocalist, Dan Nelson, giving the band a fresh injection of awesomeness.
Then of course there’s Megadeth and Slayer – both bands have new albums due out later in the year, and there are rumours brewing on MetalUnderground.com of a co-headlining tour between the two being planned for later in the year. These reports stem from a typically cryptic website post from MegaDave between one of his many shopping trips for shoes:
“I have agreed to doing something last night that I am sure a lot of people are going to be very excited about, and something that I had hoped would one day lead to another one of the potential feuds going away for good, if not for a long while. “I can’t confirm the band or the dates yet, and I have to go get my youngster up for school. Rest assured, as soon as we are ready to announce it, you will be one of the first to know.”
Interesting, we think you’ll agree. We’ve established that all the Big Four are in the best shape they’ve been in years, but after more than twenty years on the frontlines of metal, which one of them still does it for you? Ladies & gentlemen, get voting!
