When you come from a city with as big a metal pedigree as Nottingham – the birthplace of Earache Records, Rock City and Iron Monkey – then making an impact can be a bit of a challenge. Millicent Grove however, suffer no such troubles.

Thrash Hits verdict: Iron Maiden have three guitarists, therefore three guitarsts = metal. Raging Speedhorn had two vocalists, therefore two vocalist = metal. Millicent Grove have three guitarists AND two vocalists. that’s Very Metal. How did you meet?
We all knew each other from previous bands, like Jack used to be in a band with Ste and Luca a few years back, and we met Ben at the pub we always go to. So when we wanted to get two new singers and a third guitarist, we already knew who we wanted and didn’t have to audition people we didn’t know which was cool.
What made you want to start a band?
To make music that will leave a mark on the music scene. There is so many carbon copy death metal/deathcore bands around at the moment and its been like this for ages, so we thought it was time to create something totally different for people to listen to. Plus we all love making music and it’s what we’ve been doing for years now. If none of us were in this band we wouldn’t know what to do with ourselves!

Where did the name come from?
Ste came up with the name. There’s a street in West Bridgeford called ‘Millicent Grove’ and he thought it’d make a cool band name. So when this band was formed he called us Millicent Grove.
Nottingham has got one of the best metal-pedigrees of anywhere in the UK – how has living there affected your music?
Loads of really good bands have come out of Nottingham (Pitchshifter, Iron Monkey) that have left their mark and set a pretty high standard for any bands that want to make it big, so we knew that if we want to make it big we’ll have to push ourselves to make music that doesn’t blend into whatever anyone else is doing at the moment.
What are your musical influences?
The main bands are Meshuggah, Misery Signals, Acacia Strain, Down, Iron Monkey and Army Of Flying Robots. Even though we don’t sound amazingly like all of them, we do take a big influence from them.
So far, what has been the best thing about being in a band?
Being able to go to loads of different cities and get fucked. We all love playing live and it never gets boring, so being able to do that loads is pretty cool.
With which band would your dream support slot/tour be?
Van Halen and Whitesnake all the way. If not with them, then a tour with Meshuggah and The Acacia Strain would be sweet.
What’s the been the funniest show you’ve played?
We played a show in our home town a while ago, and near the end of the set this guy came on stage completely wasted and started stripping! And he was standing there practically naked with his arms out in his element until we finished our set. And at the same show there was someone going mental and trying to break one of the monitors! Could’ve been the same guy… either way it was an amazing show!

What have you got planned for your album/the future?
Well we have our 27 EP out at the moment, sorting out a mini tour for the end of September/ beginning of October and we’re also writing some new songs which we’re hoping to record sometime soon.
What other band should everyone find out about?
The Holy Moments. They are a hardcore band from Birmingham which we’ve played with in Coventry and Nottingham. They are so energetic live and their new EP sounds amazing.
