Metal Mark has a quiet month. WTF?

Our man on the ground in Atlanta, USA checks in and chats about September. Metal Mark had a quieter month than normal but still saw DOWN, Gojira and had a chat to Max Cavalera. Nice.

What’s up my metal people! September was a rather slow month when it comes to shows in Atlanta, but there were two great ones. The first day of the month, DOWN rolled into town with a killer lineup of bands, which included Evil Army, Weedeater, and The Melvins. All the opening acts were awesome, but everyone was there to see one band and one band only – DOWN.

Phil and the boys came out to a huge ovation and I don’t know if it was all the beers I had drank, or other substances in the air at the venue, but it seemed more intense than usual. They tore through their classics including ‘Bury Me In Smoke’, ‘New Orleans Is A Dying Whore’, ‘Hail The Leaf’, and ‘N.O.D.’. The whole band sounded huge and all the fans couldn’t stop banging their heads throughout the whole show. My head was ringing for a few days after this show, which is always the sign of a classic metal show. Luckily, I found a cab that night and got home safely enough to fall asleep face first on my floor. Yeah, that hurt in the morning.

In the middle of the month I got to do a phone interview with one of my all time idols in metal, Max Cavalera. He is one of the main reasons I am into metal and I got to speak with him on the phone for a good ten minutes. He was very humble and open during the interview and I had to slap myself in the face about ten times to remind myself this wasn’t a dream. Max is the man. Period.

There were a few weeks until the next show came through the city, but it was well worth the wait. It was the return of the mighty Gojira to Atlanta. Now Gojira is easily one of the best live acts on the planet right now, but they seem to blow me away no matter how many times I see them. The force and power that they have over you live is something hard to explain. I got to sit down with the lead singer Joe before the show for my second interview with him in two years. He is definitely one of the most sincere people I have ever met and a great artist to interview. We talked about the band touring with Metallica, new Gojira material, and more.

Then it was time for them to finally destroy the stage. They played for a good hour, and included all my favorite tracks including ‘Flying Whales’, ‘Vacuity’, and ‘Backbone’. Everyone in the crowd was blown away after the performance, because Gojira rips your face off live. There’s no better way to say it, they are amazing live. Luckily for me, I of course had a few beers to settle my nerves, because most of the night I was furiously banging my head and jumping in and out of the pit. So yea if you haven’t seen Gojira live, you must see them. I command you – they are phenomenal.

So September had some killer cds come out. Be sure to check out the new albums from 3 Inches Of Blood, The Black Dahlia Murder, Dying Fetus, Megadeth, Shadows Fall, Evile, Insomnium, Dethklok, Revocation, and Hatebreed. All these new albums are great and will keep you full of metal for the next month. This upcoming month I get to see Metallica, GWAR, Clutch, Chimaira, and more! I can’t wait to bang my head and drown myself in cold beers at the shows. What’s better in life? Seriously,
