One of alternative music’s most outrageously multi-talented lunatics is back, armed with a bald head, a new-found sobriety, and 60 fresh songs produced under The Devin Townsend Project moniker. Addicted is the second album of Townsend’s 4-album journey through his past styles, prior influences, and current state of middle-aged madness.

Followers of all things Dev will immediately recognise his trademark bombastic ‘wall-of-sound-in-a-cathedral-orbiting-earth’  production, used here with almost avant-garde precision – more so even than on most of his previous 14+ albums. Any lessons of self-control, awareness and resolve that Townsend has learned over he years are countered by his inability to resist his urges to  roar “SUCK IT!!!” at any given opportunity……presumably with unimaginable glee.

Anneke van Giersbergen, former vocalist with The Gathering, provides some delicious additional vocals – spliced and diced with Townsend’s range – that produce the unusual end result of a sounding all the more like a synth-pop-metal troupe let loose on Broadway. ‘Supercrush!’ sounds almost like like a catchy Evanesc…sorry…Devinescence number, and the absurd ‘Bend It Like Bender!’ verges on (look away now) those Euro-pop relics, the Vengaboys.

Before you stop and vomit into your cupped hands, consider this – these songs are imaginative and progressive, as well as catchier and heavier than anything on Ki. The thunderous ‘Universe in a Ball!’ is more than worth the entrance fee in to Devin’s wonderful world alone.

Fans of Townsend’s genius rock opera, Ziltoid the Omniscient, may be pleased to hear ‘Hyperdrive!’ rebooted with van Giersbergen on vox, though sadly this marks the point where album’s energy starts to peter out. Rumour has it the next instalment of Townsend’s series will see him return to the heavier tones we’re more used to hearing under his Strapping Young Lad identity – here’s hoping.

Sounds like: Devin shat in your brain
