Video: Far WILL make you feel sleazy with their cover of ‘Pony’

February 9th, 2010 · View Comments

If there’s one thing that usually gets on our tits, it’s rock bands doing ironic cover songs. It doesn’t ever end well. Actually, we’re not so sure it works that well when metal bands do it seriously, either. We saw a hardcore band try to cover ‘Search and Destroy’ last week and it made us so angry we nearly broke our hand from punching the nearest wall in impotent frustration.

But you know what? We’ll forgive Far for their cover of Ginuwine’s r’n'b ditty ‘Pony’. For three very good reasons.

Because:

  1. It’s sleazy as hell.
  2. It’s so far beyond ridiculous that it comes right around to being genius again.
  3. It has a cool video.

If you’re that way inclined, you can head on over to Far’s official website and find out how to buy it.

But slightly ridiculous covers aren’t the only thing Far’s members have been getting up to recently. In an interview just published on Spin, Deftones frontman Chino Moreno has been letting slip details of a new side-project he and a member of Far have been fooling around with:

“I’m also doing a couple side projects. Most recently I have the Holy Ghost, which I’m doing with my buddy Shaun Lopez from the band Far. He lives a couple blocks away from me, so I go over to his studio a few nights a week and work on this electro record. Annie Hardy from Giant Drag has done a couple vocals on this project, too.”

That’d be the same Annie Hardy who provided the  guest vocals on the near-album spoiling ‘Pink Cellphone’ on Saturday Night Wrist then, wouldn’t it? Oh. She also once recorded a cover of Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’, which along with Far’s dirty little ditty, has reminded us that there’s less than a week until Valentine’s Day. [Please feel free to insert your own snide comment about it being a Hallmark Holiday here. Seriously, we can't be arsed to make one. We gotta take a break from the cynicism sometime, y'know?]

Other than throwing down like motherfuckers to The Ghost Of A Thousand, can anyone think of any particularly metal ways to woo one’s partner this coming holiday? Maybe you’re taking your lady along to HIM at the Highbury Garage? Fuck! We’ve just remembered HIM have also covered ‘Wicked Game’. To be honest, we’re not surprised – everyone knows it is one of three things that all women love:

What is it with this sexy metal covers thing we’ve got going on today? If anyone has any other sexy metal suggestions – especially sexy metal cover songs - then drop us a comment down below. I think we’ve found the inspiration for the first Sunday Spotify Slaylist of 2010….

I watched Far in the 90s, then I saw their come back show at the ULU the other year. I nearly wept it was so good. I love how the original emo bands are returning, I am still reeling that I am on tour when Sunny Day Real Estate are playing London in April.

Far – Bury White. Best track ever.

So happy you got it. The hard rock ironic cover is a cockroach of pop culture, the sure sign of a band desperate to get on the radio, or back on the radio after an absence (Manson’s done it at least twice, may well again). I’m well aware that our cover could be perceived as such, but I know how much fun it was to make, and that we did it with no aspirations or ambition. Feels good.
