EP: Wounds – Dead Dead Fucking Dead

Dead Dead Fucking Dead EP

Dublin-based Wounds have whipped up a bit of a media storm of late. Currently being touted by some magazine fuckwits as ‘art-hardcore’ – presumably a combination of art house and hardcore punk (oh how do you do it!? I wish I could be as imaginative as you) – I prefer to think of them as exactly what they are – a bloody raging post-punk outfit reminiscent of Scratch Acid, Big Black and Drive Like Jehu, with a bit of the good bits from The Horrors chucked in for good measure.

Their debut release, Dead Dead Fucking Dead, is a 7-track blitz of discordant dissidence that can only come out of an overall feeling of disparity with your surroundings. From the growling bass-driven ‘Vectors’, which sounds like a stripped-down Converge-meets-Throats, or the more elaborate ‘Choke’ with its guitars warbling their way towards you like they have been released from the venomous tendrils of Ryan Frederiksen of These Arms Are Snakes, it all eventually falls into place, albeit in the way Tetris blocks do after you have ballsed a few up at the bottom of the stack.

Watch Wounds play ‘Pyramids’ live last year:

Opinion are still very mixed opinions on Wounds at present, with their chaotic shows treading the line between performance art and an all out full-contact punk shoot out. Whether you look at Wounds as a well put together package, or an over groomed grease ball, it really doesn’t matter; what lurches from your speakers is an grotesque ghoul so repugnant that you have to keep looking at it.
