On a mammoth European tour this summer check out their recent album Brainwreck for a slice of no-nonsense musical mayhem.
Describe your sound in 3 words
Boats and hoes.
How did you guys meet?
Kallen, Ricky and Pete we’re already playing in a band called Despotic Robot for about a year when they met me through the local music scene. Their drummer at the time was looking for more of a death metal band and I’m more of a punk rock dude so it made sense to swap us out. We knew Phil from his old band Bones Brigade and he slimed his way into the band when we fired our old bass player for cutting his hair.
What made you want to start a band?
The lack of any other talents? Seriously. What else are we going to do? Accounting?
Where did the name come from?
The David Cross tv show Mr. Show had a skit where there’s a gay porno called ‘Ramming Speed’. We were all drunk watching that one night and everything fell into place! It was one of those, “This is it!” moments.
What was it like being from Boston and how would you rate the Boston scene?
Boston is a great city with a ton of music and kids looking to party every weekend. The metal scene here is definitely growing and it’s a good home base for touring, being so close to NYC, Philly, New Jersey etc, but of course living anywhere for too long will drive you crazy and that’s what hitting the road is for.
What are your musical influences?
Tragedy, Anthrax, Disfear, Napalm Death, DRI, Slayer. Shit that’s fast and raw mostly. Also more riffy stuff like Thin Lizzy and Maiden!
So far, what has been the best thing about being in Ramming Speed?
Being a group of best friends that travels the world playing heavy metal is pretty fucking awesome. We’ve been lucky enough to play shows in wild places like Iceland and the Czech Republic and convinced a number of rad labels to put out our records. It has its downs (being poor and hungry on the road), but overall the band is a great experience.
With which band would your dream tour be (current or past)?
The package tour would be: Terrorizer, Carcass, Pantera, Metallica with long hair, and His Hero Is Gone. Booyah! Next question.
What bands do you consider as part of your scene or as your peers?
In the Boston area Revocation, Razormaze and Powerstance are the main thrashers besides us. In general though we always love playing with our punk/metal brothers in Battlemaster, Cannabis Corpse, ANS, Seasick and In Defence. We run into those bands a few times a year, whether we like it or not. We have a bunch of random shows coming up with Municipal Waste, so that should be delightful.
You’re going out on a world tour this summer. Will it be your longest tour? How have you prepared?
We’re road dogs man. We generally tour for between 6 and 8 weeks at at time so this one coming up is pretty much on par with the rest.. It’s 7 weeks and about 46 cities of beer and brutality spanning across Europe. Should be a blast! We’ve been training with a rough and tumble schedule of band practices, beer drinking and movie watching.
How do shows in the States compare to ones in Europe?
Shows in Europe are a lot different from shows here. Everything from the way bands are treated, to the venues, to the reaction from kids and it honestly differs from country to country. I think shows in the US are much more relaxed, which translates into kids going crazier more often, but also shows starting late, bands not getting paid, etc. In mainland Europe you might get a more subdued reaction in some countries, but shows are so well organized that it’s worth it. The shows start on time, you get a warm meal, a bed, and a good attentive crowd even if it’s your first time there.
What’s the best show you’ve ever played?
We played this goregrind/death metal fest in Catalonia (Northern Spain, near Barcelona) last summer and the first day of the fest they put us on early in the evening. Kids ended up going so bonkers during our set that they asked us to stay and headline the second day of the fest. Sure enough the second time around shit was even wilder: tons of circle pits, stage dives, and a shirtless fat kid running around with a big dick drawn on his chest. He kept stopping during the solos to stare us in the eyes and slap the dick in time with the music. At some point someone put a cardboard box with a robot face cut out of it on Kallen’s head and he had no choice but to finish the set wearing the thing, dancing and bobbing around trying to see his guitar through the eye holes. It was so funny I almost fell off the drum set!
What other band should everyone find out about?
There’s a new band out of Maine called War Animal that totally rip, they sound like Disfear fucking Annihilation Time. Also Canada’s Barn Burner, New York’s Concussion and Richmond’s Volture are all shredders.
What do you prefer, human pyramids or circle pits?
Thrash til death?
Til bedtime, at least.
What is the best speed for ramming?
What is it in Back To The Future? 88 miles per hour? So roughly… 141.6 km/h? Fuck yeah.
