Sounds Like: A Sloppy Joe mix of gutter-dirty grunge rock, red raw thrash and heart-in-head hardcore.
Thrash Hits verdict: You might already have a vague idea of what we think they sound like from the above description, but the first thing that sprang to mind when we saw Turbogeist live was: “Wayne’s World meets Bill & Ted”. Messy but fun. Right? They also had the biggest crowd in the room so have already made a lot of friends in the grimy east London rock scene so keep an ear out. We asked Jimmy Jagger and occasionally Luis Felber some questions…
Describe your sound in 3 words
Big fast and lurid.
How did you meet?
We met in an indie disco and bonded over our combined hatred for it.
What made you want to start a band?
We all were in other bands before and all passionate about heavy music. It would be weird if we didn’t want to start a band.
Where did the name come from?
A doomed German sports car. [We can find no evidence of this car. We fear we are being lied to – Ed]
What are your musical influences?
What does “DC” mean to you?
So far, what has been the best thing about being in Turbogeist?
Playing sweaty shows with great bands!
Eating the finest burgers.
Playing SXSW last March and everything that went with it.
With which band would your dream tour be?
What’s the best or funniest show you’ve played?
Hmmm… probably the warehouse party we had with Invasion and Bad For Lazarus. We played and it was the end for our epileptic bass player. We had a slippery, messy show with people jumping and flipping all over the shop. Was just great to watch my friends fuck each other up.
Talk us through your favourite Turbogeist song.
We each have different songs that appeal to us most and its mostly a mood thing. ‘Baba Yoga’ is doing it for me right now. Seems like it’s pretty dark stuff but it’s just silly satirical bullshit underneath.
Luis: I really like a song called ‘Sheen’ too. It goes, “Durrr duh dluh dluh dluh duh dluh dluh duh DA DA DA!!” Or ‘Big Meanie’: “Nah nah nah nah nah anh…. etc…”
You’ve already got a tour of North America coming up. How come you’ve already shifted your focus from the UK?
We are a British band and haven’t shifted our focus. The UK is our birthplace and our musical home. We just had a great opportunity and leapt on it.
When should we expect an album?
Sometime in 2011!! we feel we almost have the material to pull it off. We have a great producer on-board and wanting to keep going with our DIY ethic, We will do it all ourselves. It’s pretty exciting shit – we have to set up a record company!
What other band should everyone find out about and why?
Dud. Shellac-esque moments with a Dinosaur Jr feel and it’s British!
Thrush Metal. The best thing come from four pussies.
Tell us a joke.
Whats 12 inches small and makes ladies cry all night…? Crib death.
Turbogeist are just about to head off on tour across North America so unless you’re reading this from across the Atlantic (which is not that unlikely), it’s going to be difficult to watch them play until at least the end of October. In the meantime, have a look and a listen at Turbogeist’s official MySpace.
