2011 Album Preview: Amon Amarth – Surtur Rising

Amon Amarth

ETA 29 March 2011

What they’re saying:
Speaking to Terrorizer magazine, frontman and general Viking hero Johan Hegg said:

“Obviously, the songs are going to be Amon Amarth – that’s what we’ve always done – but we wanted to put a little more edge to our sound, so hopefully that’s going to come out after the mixing and everything. We’ve laid down ten tracks, and as is usual for us, every one of them is going to end up on the album.”

Thrash Hits verdict:
Sweeping out of the frosty North to lay waste to your cities and drink all your beer (you can insert your own joke stereotyping Scottish people in there- we’re not nearly brave enough), Amon Amarth are very much on an upward curve. The last two records have been the best of a career that began in the 1980s, full of gigantic riffs and songs about Vikings. We expect similarly big Norse things of Surtur Rising– and not just the beards.

Guitar solo potential:
2/6

Thunder, fire, vikings, blood, death, beards, win:
