Black Metal History Month by Brendan Dacey for Metal Injection

Don’t you just hate it when someone has a genius idea that you wish you’d thought of first? One so painstakingly obvious – and at the same time so elegantly brilliant – that you know that you could have had it? Well, that’s exactly how we currently feel after seeing Metal Injection’s quite frankly why-didn’t-anyone-think-of-this-before idea that is Black Metal History Month?

Black Metal History Month is, of course, a pun on Black History Month, which the USA and Canada celebrate in February. Here in the UK, we celebrate it in October so….err….okay, it doesn’t quite fit with our calendar, but hey, as we’ve already pointed out, we didn’t come up with this idea. Metal Injection kicked off their idea with this little educational number:

As the chaps over at Metal Sucks already pointed out, there’s probably plenty of people out there ready to get offended that a celebration of the history of displaced and oppressed peoples has been subverted using a simple play-on-words to a somewhat jokey examination of a genre that’s played host to a staggering number of racists, bigots, murderers and arseholes. Of course, the fact that Black Metal takes itself so seriously is what also makes it so inherently hilarious. As much as black metal might people to fear it, we can’t help but stifle our giggles.

So in that spirit, we want your help in finding the truly ridiculous (i.e. hilarious) extremes of Black Metal in the internet. And while nothing will ever reach the sheer blacker-than-black black metal-ness of this particularly legendary clip, that doesn’t mean the world can’t keep trying. If you think you’ve found something even grimmer than Gaahl’s proclamation of Gorgoroth’s chief musical inspiration, drop us a comment down below.
