Accept! Is there any band more metal? Feel free to debate this question with yourself after looking at Gary Wolstenholme’s lovely, lovely photos, and reading of Amit Sharma’s experiences of being Balls To The Wall with a bunch of Germans.
Six things we learned from seeing Accept @ Hammerfest:
- It’s OK to wear to more than one belt. Extra points for more than 2 rows of studs and chains that dangle off it.
- More bands should head to the very back of the stage, kneel down and then charge towards the crowd. It does sound odd, but to songs called ‘Metal Heart’ and ‘Fast As A Shark’ it makes perfect sense.
- Wolf Hoffman is one of the most underrated guitarists in metal. Anthems like ‘Breaker’ and ‘Son Of A Bitch’ show that he is not only an exceptional songwriter, but also a fierce shredder that chooses to play well thought out melodic phrases instead of mindless fretwanking.
- New vocalist Mark Tornillo has proven to be a great choice. He effortlessly tackles the high pitched shrieking on tracks made famous by original vocalist Udo Dirkschneider, whilst also adding his own stamp on the newer material off comeback album, Blood Of The Nations. Plus his surname is way cooler (sorry, Dirkschneider).
- The newer songs are heavier and actually sound quite modern. They sit very well next to the older classics which feel even meatier due to a guitar tone that is more driven and distorted than on the records.
- You haven’t lived until you’ve been in a crowd of hairy, bearded men singing the words from ‘Balls To The Wall’ to 5 middle aged Germans wearing leather.
