Some facts of life are eternal and unchangeable – night follows day, internet messageboards will always be full of idiots talking nonsense about subjects they claim to be experts in, and June 06 will always be The International Day of Slayer. And since it’s been a rough year for the godfathers of evil thrash – what with Jeff Hanneman contracting a flesh-eating virus and everything – so it’s particularly important to mark this year’s event by playing Slayer louder than ever.
This year the founders of the International Day of Slayer have even gone so far as to petition the United Nations to have The International Day of Slayer recognised as an “official” worldwide holiday. For some reason, the UN haven’t gotten back to them yet. Ho hum. I guess they had some more important business to attend to.
On a slightly more musical level, organiser also gone and assembled one of the largest collections of bands covering Slayer songs in the world. We won’t pretend that there are a fair few stinkers in there (we’re looking at you, new-arrangement-that-just-doesn’t-work-by-Tori-Amos), but there’s some real killer tracks in there too.
Those of you who still use Spotify might want also want to check this little Slaylist we put together a while ago – like Slayer, it might’ve been kicking around for a fair few years now, but it still most definitely slays:

If all this talk of Slayer has got you in the mood to catch the band live, they’ll be returning to the UK next month for Sonisphere Festival 2011. The San Francisco foursome will be performing on the Friday of the festival as part of the first (and in all probability, last) collective performance of The Big Four, so if you ain’t got your tickets yet, now would be a good time to break out your wallet.
