From: Brighton, England
Lazy Equation: (Motorhead x Zeke) + Winnebago Deal
Thrash Hits Verdict:
Sometimes with all the sub-genres and the effort put in, it’s nice to just shove on a bit of balls-to-the-wall hard rock. It’s music that, once you’ve finished getting down to it, makes you hope that that wall was painted. Otherwise, you’ll have sore balls. Whitemare don’t seem to write long songs which is good for people with short attention sp
Describe your sound in 3 words.
Short, fast, loud.
How did you meet?
All of us knew each other well before we formed Whitemare. We were all in various heavy bands around Brighton, and got friendly through playing shows together.
What made you want to start a band?
We all agreed that a band like Whitemare needed to exist!
Where did the name come from?
We originally wanted to call ourselves ‘The Fuck’, but our old rhythm guitarist wouldn’t allow it because he was afraid his mum wouldn’t approve… So we sacked him, then decided the name Whitemare was probably a better one anyway. A ‘whitemare’ is a cross between a whitey and a nightmare. It’s a name for a ridiculously bad whitey. If for some reason you don’t know what a whitey is, I’m sure Google will tell you.
What are your musical influences? You sound very little like Johnny Truant or Centurion after all.
All the classics: Kiss, Zeke, AC/DC, ZZ Top, Pantera, Motley Crue, Decapitated, R Kelly, Darkthrone, Ted Nugent, The Hellacopters, Toto, Creeper and Fright, Elton John, Down, and Katy Perry.
Do you like Motorhead?
With which band would your dream tour be?
We’d happily allow any of the bands in the influences question to take us on tour!
What bands do you consider as part of your scene or as your peers?
As far as scenes go, we’re not really part of one, or at least not that we know of yet. A lot of people who were into our previous bands (and that whole ‘scene’) hear about us and expect something along the same lines, then get very confused when they see us play. Some of them get it, some don’t. But there’s also a completely different group of people emerging who really like what we do, which is brilliant.
So far, what has been the best thing about being in a band?
Playing music we love, exactly how we want to, and seeing other people enjoy it as well.
What’s the best or funniest show you’ve played?
We played one show where an old man suddenly appeared on stage with us, walked around the stage and proceeded to show us pages of some book he was reading while calmly talking to us about them. We couldn’t hear anything he was saying, as we were in the middle of our set. He was eventually cleared off the stage and back into the crowd, but after the show he came up to our guitarist Al, and told him he wanted to “throat fuck” him. Another time we saw a guy do a backflip in our pit and land it perfectly, then do another one a few seconds later. We often seem to get fights at our shows too. They get split up, but our songs do make a good soundtrack to them while they last.
What other band should everyone find out about?
Blackdream. They’re pretty much the opposite of us.
Tell us a joke.
Why are pregnant women not hungry? Because they gest-ate.
Whitemare have got their debut album, Snider recorded and ready to go. It’ll be coming out “soon” and it’s safe to say that as soon as they know anything, we’ll know next and then you’ll know. It’s how this all works.
