Amit 2011 End Of Year

For those of you unfamiliar with the name Amit Sharma, he’s the swish young longhair you’ll have seen interviewing bands over on our YouTube channel. Amit is so superfly, that Corey Taylor once mistook him for an actual rockstar. True story. He really, really wanted his own page to tell you about his favourite albums of the year, and after sending us loads and loads (and loads!) of emails, eventually we stopped being so controlling and capitulated. Here’s Amit Sharma’s Albums of 2011.

1. Mastodon – The Hunter

I must admit when ‘Black Tongue‘ and ‘Curl Of The Burl‘ were released, I wasn’t convinced this would be the album I was hoping for. Part of me was holding out for Crack The Skye Part II, which Mastodon were very careful to avoid. Instead they chose to deliver an album that started off sounding more 70′s Rock than they ever have done, before slowly evolving into a progressive masterpiece. The best albums get better every time you listen to them and The Hunter does this more than anything else released this year. (Click here for the Thrash Hits review of The Hunter)

2. Opeth - Heritage

I genuinely was excited for Opeth when they announced Heritage would incoporate a stylistical shift away from death metal in order to further explore their progressive influences. The result is something especially unique – a spellbinding body of work that owes as much to jazz and prog as it does to Black Sabbath. (Click here for the Thrash Hits review of Heritage)

3. Anathema – Falling Deeper

After the jaw-dropping awesomeness of last year’s We’re Here Because We’re Here, I was itching to hear something new from Anathema. What I got was something half new and half old - Falling Deeper is a collection of songs from their earlier catalogue reinterpreted in that resplendently majestic style they have perfected in recent years.
