There can’t be many albums that get metal fans’ collective excitement up as much as Slayer’s Reign In Blood does, which is why it seemed like everyone with even the slightest metal tinge to their record collection in the South of England decamped to North London last week to catch Slayer perform arguably their best (and certainly most important) album in full at All Tomorrow’s Parties’ I’ll Be Your Mirror festival at Alexandra Palace. Gary Wolstenholme doesn’t even live in the South, but he still made the trek down from his native Sheffield to take photos of it for us.
Also playing at ATP’s London event last Friday were Sleep, the Melvins, Wolves In The Throne Room, Yob and A Storm Of Light. And Gary, being the diligent professional that he is, sot us snaps of them. Well, he didn’t send us any snaps of Yob or A Storm Of Light, but given that Gary’s photographic talents are in demand from classy, well-known publications like The Guardian, we’re not about to start giving him any lip on that score.
We spoke to Slayer’s drummer, Dave Lombardo, over the phone earlier this week. We woke him up in a hotel room in Switzerland and demanded he tell us stories about Mike Patton and Kerry King. We’ll be publishing the results of our intercontinental telephonic interrogation for you next week. Exciting times!
