The Thrash Hits Podcast 018: The Racist, Sexist, Homophobic Underbelly of Metal

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

Uh-oh – we’re dealing with some Serious Stuff on this episode of the podcast. This week, Hugh is joined by Tom Doyle as they take a look at the unpleasant creeping tolerance for casual racism, sexism, homophobia and hate that has creeped into the fandom of modern metal, rock, and punk, and also at significant sections of the community’s unwillingness to recognise or address it in a meaningful way. Yeah, it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Please make sure that you listen to the whole of this week’s episode before rage-mailing us a load of angry, misplaced rage at what you think we’re talking about. It’s a good thing that we’re talking about this stuff, but we’d like to talk about the topics at hand, not someone’s blundering misunderstanding about what they think we’re talking about.

    Sensible, clear and interesting.

Nicely done, all this stuff needs called out. The outsider thing is interesting. As an older guy in a local council community job, liking metal etc is seen by some colleagues as a bit at odds with the left wing equality stuff that we do. That’s because folk outside metal view it as something violent, intolerant etc. any voice within metal that confirms this will get airplay in the mainstream press, acting to confirm the mainstream’s suspicions about ‘us’ being the bad guys after all, that’s why we need to call it for what it is and demonstrate that although there’s aggression, it’s not hate.
