If You Buy One Thing This Week: Hesitation Marks by Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nails live at Reading Thrash Hits

There have been few comebacks as eagerly awaited as Nine Inch Nails. It’s been more than five years since The Slip, so the release of Trent Reznor’s latest album, Hesitation Marks, has quite rightly seen the hype machine go seven shades of psycho over the songs that preceded the full album stream being made available.

Not content with causing a veritable internet shitstorm over the release of a “happy” NIN song in the form of ‘Everything’, Reznor’s been causing all sorts of a stir here in the UK in the last few weeks. Not only did NIN crash their website servers when tickets for their pre-Reading/Leeds smallest-ever-London-gig warm-up show went on sale, but problems at Reading and Leeds festivals with the size of Nine Inch Nails’ incredibly impressive stage set sent Reznor off on a bit of a Twitter rant against the promoters (and headliners Biffy Clyro)…

Anyway, none of this changes the fact that Hesitation Marks is still arguably one of the records of 2013. In keeping with Reznor’s recent works with soundtracks, the album is more a complete body of work than a collection of Big Hits, but it’s no less an incredible piece of work for that. We’re going to discuss Reznor’s evolution as a songwriter in this week’s Cloudcast, but for the time being….
