If You Buy One Thing This Week: Sister by In Solitude

It’s been a while since we caught up with In Solitude, but that’s not because the Swedes have been hiding in a cave somewhere in the Scandinavian peninsula. No, they’ve actually been holed up at Studio Cobra in Stockholm, working on their third album, the simply-titled but sonically-menacing Sister.

Sister is perhaps the purest distillation of what In Solitude have been trying to achieve since their self-titled debut album started pricking up ears way back in 2008. It marries retro-sounding tones and sensibilities with an ice-cold heart of Swedish dark metal. It’s got wicked charm by the fjordful, and manages to convey a bleak and desolate atmosphere without resorting to the hoary old shrieks that so many of their compatriots mistake for genuine chills. Couple that with Pelle Åhman’s almost crooning vocals, and in Sister you’ve got a compelling choice for If You Buy One Thing This Week.
