It’s been a long time coming, but the new Bastions EP is finally here. Bedfellows pt.2 – The Forgotten Daughter is the five-song companion EP to Bedfellows pt.1 – The Bastard Son. That the former came out on New Year’s Eve 2012 (more than a year ago!) has made the wait for this closing half of the Welsh four-piece’s concept EP series on the nature of mental illness and the way it has torn a family apart across generations even more torturous, but now that it’s here, we’ve got no hesitation in recommending it as our choice for If You Buy One Thing This Week.
The guys over on Punktastic have an excellent in-depth interview with Jamie Burne, Bastions’ frontman and the principal force behind the series’ narrative – we highly recommend you go read it as while an understanding of the themes at work isn’t at all necessary in order to enjoy the caustic and fraught emotion of Bastions’ work, it provides an extra window of insight into both their songwriting and the powerful ideas working their way through both these EPs. Truth be told, you really shouldn’t just go and buy Bedfellows pt.2 – The Forgotten Daughter this week – make sure you go and by Bedfellows pt.1 – The Bastard Son too if you don’t already. These records were – quite literally – made to compliment each other. To own just one is to own merely half the story. You need to own both.
