Thrash Hits verdict: As with pretty much all new bands, they formed from the ashes of a couple of bands from within the same local scene and Shrine did just that. With drummer, Liam Kearley and bassist, Andrew Gosden putting the band together with Joe Gosney, guitarist and today’s interview subject, they started putting music together. When Will Gardner’s band, Lithurgy parted ways, he added vocals. The result is a proggy, math riff-oriented mix of rock and metal that knows how long to linger on the melodies and when to descend into darker, sludgier ways. They’re releasing a new EP on 07 April 2014 but we’re streaming it below. Listen to it.
Describe your sound in three words
Dark, Heavy, Melodic
What made you want to start a band?
I guess its just through searching for a band that didn’t exist yet!
Where did the name come from?
Theres no obscure back story here. Its a name we all agreed was short and memorable.
What are your musical influences?
As a band we have a pretty wide range of influences. We will listen to anything that sounds good us though. A good amount of Oceansize, Mastodon and The Mars Volta always goes down well with us though!
So far, what has been the best thing about being in a band?
Hands down touring! For us it makes all the hard work involved with getting a band together worth it. Having the opportunity to go to some amazing places and play music to a load of fresh faces every night. Thats what its all about right?
With which band would your dream tour be?
We have a long list, but Mastodon would probably be top.
What’s the most memorable show you’ve played?
I think that would have to be Vigo on the northern coast of Spain. the morning of that show we woke up in a campsite on the beach thinking we were just two hours away from the venue. Once we got into the car we switched on the sat nav only to find out we were 6 hours away. A couple of speeding tickets later we got to the venue to find the whole street outside packed with kids eager for the gig. We basically ran inside threw our gear on the stage and played probably one of our most furious sets yet. Such a fun time.
What bands do you consider as part of your scene or as your peers?
Polymath, The Physics House Band, Broker and Vasa just to name a few. Check them out.
What other band should everyone find out about?
A band called Empress. Big big things coming from these guys.
What is the most metal thing you’ve done?
On our last tour Will was pissed on by a cat and Liam broke most of his drum kit by hitting it too hard…. Thats pretty metal.
What have you got planned for the future?
We have some exciting tours coming up then back into the studio very soon to record the second part of our debut EP. We also have some big plans for the end of the year that unfortunately we can’t tell you about just yet.
