Despite existing as a band for nearly 25 years, Converge rarely – if ever – disappoint. They’ve managed to become increasingly relevant; whereas most bands fade further into obscurity with age, maybe breaking up once, twice, or seven times, only to reunite and play whichever back album marked their careers.

Live: The Bamboozle Festival @ Asbury Park, NJ – 18-20 May 2012

It’s nice having a genuine fist-pumping, bridge and tunnel New Jersey boy in our ranks. That Dan Pelic is one of our writers means that we can review things like The Bamboozle Festival with ease. Foo Fighters, Bon Jovi and… Skrillex headline the three-day event and it’s on A BEACH. Cool.

WARNING: Dan’s in a bad mood.

Six things we noticed at the “scene-est” of all music festivals in Asbury Park, NJ

It’s not as if the point of a record review is ever to exact a reaction out of the artist itself, but this review would probably make Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala a happy couple. Why? Because this record from The Mars Volta is such an utter disappointment – which is what they accepted it might be, because they are true artistes who do it for the art, right maaaan?

What Caliban does nowadays is done….a lot. But, hell….they do it well. Caliban’s first properly issued LP, Vent, released back in 2001, was an instant metalcore classic, not only for its raw and penetrating sound, but for the band’s teetotaler views – refusing the very fermented beverage Germany is most known for.

Fast-forward to more than a decade later, the band no longer openly claims the Edge, and have allowed clean-singing to infiltrate their repertoire… ::shudders::

This far into the very existence of death metal, bands may well have to go against the anti-melodic grain many of the genre tend to follow. Bands like Decapitated have raised the bar for blasters and grinders to find groove – an elusive, serpent-like creature few bands come to capture and train to dance effectively alongside the ultimate brutality all death metal acts inevitably compete to attain.

Live: Give Up The Ghost / American Nightmare @ Boston Wonderland Ballroom – 29 December 2011

You must have heard that Give Up The Ghost American Nightmare reformed for two shows in the USA late in 2011, right? Maybe not. . It was a very exciting announcement, by all accounts. AN/GUTG are one of the seminal hardcore bands of the past decade and if you’ve never heard about them, here’s Tom Doyle telling you why and how you should and could.

Luckily, our man on the ground on the Eastern Seaboard, or whatever those Yanks call the Greater New York area (maybe that?) was there. Yeah, Dan Pelic went to the show in Revere, Massachusetts and he actually saw Ryan Gosling. He also saw American Nightmare or Give Up The Ghost or whatever you want to call them. He didn’t make a funny Tumblr about either thing but has written a review telling it how it is…

The extended play music recording – a delicate challenge to produce as a cohesive and complete work, in order to leave a band as proud papas. Well, seems pops wasn’t around much on this one and his neglect has resulted in a dropout, crack-smoking failure of an EP.

This languid record contains but one original song and a cover, along with two remixes and an acoustic snoozer of ‘End of Flesh’ from 2010’s, A New Era of Corruption.

As a genre, stoner rock has become much like a steak left too long on the barbecue because everyone got too drunk and high to tend to it: Overdone, dry, and tasteless.

As a band, Black Tusk are probably a bit too drunk and high to avoid embodying the most prevalent negative stereotypes of their genre: Senseless and forgettable riffing, shit vocals, and nonsensical lyrics.
