Sunday Slaylist: Hammerfest IV – The Hammer of Thor

This time next week, our intrepid representatives at Hammerfest IV – The Hammer of Thor, will be slowly trying to recover from a weekend where the level of attention paid to the many heavy metal bands playing is directly (and inversely) proportional to the levels of booze being imbibed by them. How do we know they’ll be getting smashed rather than getting their mosh on? Well, because even if you headline your event with Anthrax and Skindred, we know for a fact that whenever more than one Thrash Hits contributor ends up in the same room at Pontin’s in Prestatyn, someone ends up puking. That’s not us trying to sound like a bunch of lads-on-tour kerrrrayyyzzzyy drunks either – that’s the raw statistics of Hammerfest talking.

In any case, we figured we’d put together a Hammerfest-themed Spotify Slaylist to start getting them in the mood nice and early.

Bet you weren’t expecting that on Thrash Hits, right?

You imagine Amon Amarth must have approached album number eight in something of a quandary. Eclipsing Twilight Of The Thunder God seemed an unlikely prospect, given that record was as catchy and riff-laden as was it. Maybe that’s why Surtur Rising at first seems a little disappointing – this is a slightly different Amon Amarth to what we’re used to.

Both of the major heavy music festivals have announced all of their headliners now. Sonisphere Festival came straight out with Metallica and Linkin Park while the acts appearing at Download Festival 2009 were dripfed to us much more slowly.

Claiming Slipknot, Def Leppard and Faith No More as headliners, with the mighty, reformed Limp Bizkit (pictured) also hitting the stage, Download is looking good. Sonisphere, however, is an unknown quantity but has the strong names of Lamb Of God, Machine Head and Mastodon on the undercard.

Who said Slayer were old school? There seemed to be an Unholy curse on our technology! Our video camera chewed up our tape and our camera packed up halfway through. Hugh Platt still managed to remember some…

With a beard so mighty it increases his hair swing per headbang by at least 40%, Johan Hegg’s Swedes open the Unholy Alliance in raucous style. Amon Amarth’s viking anthems are so heavy, one audience member literally shits himself and is carried out in shame. So begins The Unholy Alliance.
