Animals as Leaders is a Washington, D.C. based instrumental progressive metal project formed by guitarist Tosin Abasi in 2007. Their self-titled debut album was released in April 2009 by Prosthetic Records.

Animals as Leaders was formed "out of the ashes" of guitarist Tosin Abasi's previous band, Reflux. The heavy metal record label Prosthetic Records saw Abasi's guitar work and asked him to create a solo album for them. Abasi initially declined, feeling such an endeavor would be "egotistical and unnecessary". Read more on Last.fm

Tosin Abasi is an interesting bloke. The eight-string guitarmanship is impressive, sure, but that’s not what I’m talking about. With his outfit Animals as Leaders, he’s turned what should be skilful but nerdy YouTube fodder into one of the most exciting and extroverted metal outfits to come out of the most recent wave of heavy progressive music.

If there’s one member of the Thrash Hits team guaranteed to get along with Tosin Abasi, the guitar virtuoso at the heart of Animals As Leaders, it’s our man, Amit Sharma. The pair of them giggled like children as they traded stories about Frank Gambale, Guthrie Govan, and the wonders of 7- and 8-strong guitars. We suspect if our video camera hadn’t been there, they might’ve even gotten a little fresh with each other.
