Battlelore was founded in 1999 in Lappeenranta, Finland by Jyri Vahvanen and Miika Kokkola. Their first promo CD Warrior's Tale was released the same year. Though the release was taken pretty well, it is their second demo Dark Fantasy that caught the attention of Napalm Records's executives, thereby providing them with the future studio records and live gigs. Battlelore released six albums and went on an indefinite hiatus in 2011.

Look what we found in the archives that’d slipped through the cracks – an interview we did with Finnish folk-metallers, Battlelore, at Bloodstock Open Air 2009. Which is handy timing really, considering their new album, The Last Alliance, is out here in the UK next week, and they’re coming over to tour in support of it later this week.

We’d be lying if we didn’t acknowledge that metal loves to follow trends – and we’re not just talking about the scene kids and their ridiculous hairstyles, this “nu-metal revival” that certain sectors of the metal media seem convinced is on the horizon, or the hipster pile-on that Mastodon unintentionally encourage. Even the tr00est of the tr00 catch a ride on a bandwagon from time to time.

Yet more names have been added to the ever-growing line-up for Bloodstock Open Air 2009. Not only have Finnish symphonic metallers, Battlelore, joined the bill, but Metal Hammer are reporting that everyone’s favourite alien thrash-punk party monsters, Gwar, have been added as well. And they should know – frontman, Oderus Urungus (that’s him with the granny) is one of their columnists. Now where did we leave those jizz-proof umbrella?
