Best-of-2013-Editorial

Reviews, interviews, and the like are our bread and butter – as much as we like our giant, sprawling, controversy-stirring opinion pieces, it’d be knackering if that’s all we did. Today we’re going to look back at our biggest reviews and interviews of 2013 – and by “biggest”, we mean the ones that the most people read. Oh, and reveal what was the most popular entry in our high-brow Heavy Metal Sandwich series. Just because.

Interview: Michael ‘Padge’ Paget from Bullet For My Valentine

February 14th, 2013

bfmv 2013

Hey! It’s Valentine’s Day? Is that a rubbish enough segue into a Bullet For My Valentine interview? Probably not. Oh well. As regular readers of Thrash Hits know, Bullet For My Valentine are most definitely a band we have opinions (fast forward to 33mins 13 secs…) that sometimes get us in to a bit of trouble with them. So when Nick Hagan emailed us late last year telling us that he had some time interviewing Michael “Padge” Paget from thet band (that’s him lurking behind Matt Tuck above and looking like he might bite your throat out), we said “yeah, okay,” with all the enthusiasm that two-word response implies.

That said, we do wonder what Padge would say to us now after we published Raz’s drunken 6/6 (ahem) review of Temper Temper….

Something occurred to me whilst hearing ‘Temper Temper’ on Radio 1 whilst lying in bed. I thought the title track to the Welsh quartet’s fourth album was a fucking abomination. Causing short circuits in my brain, however, was the fact I also genuinely enjoy going to see this band live. This handy combination of first-hand knowledge of my past actions coupled with my instant reaction to their shitty song on the radio could mean only one thing: I only enjoy Bullet For My Valentine when I’m drunk.

BBC Radio 1 Review Show Edith Bowman Mike Duce Lower Than Atlantis Hugh Platt Thrash Hits

2012 was the year we went legit. Well, not really, but it was the year that we got to pull out Ron Burgandy’s “I’m kind of a big deal” attitude as BBC Radio 1 called us up and asked if we wanted to take part in the Radio 1 Review Show. Y’know – sharing our expert opinion on rock music and all that for an hour on national radio. Well, it was the Radio 1 Week of Rock, after all.

BBC Radio 1 Review Show Edith Bowman Mike Duce Lower Than Atlantis Hugh Platt Thrash Hits

In case you’re not one of the literal thousands of people who follow Thrash Hits on Facebook and Twitter, then this might’ve passed you by: last night our Deputy Editor, Hugh Platt, appeared on BBC Radio 1’s Review Show, spouting off about new tracks from Mallory Knox, Gnarwolves, Bullet For My Valentine, and his personal pick – Converge. Why did Edith Bowman invite us in as pundits? Well, it’s all down to Radio 1 Rocks – nearly a week of special programming where the UK’s flagship music broadcaster recognises that there are plenty of us out there who like our music LOUDER and HEAVIER than the average listener.

Thrash Hits TV: Andy Copping talks Download Festival 2011 – the headliners, the competition, and Snog Marry Avoid

June 9th, 2011

When we sat down with Download Festival promoter and all-round head honcho, Andy Copping, we’ll admit that we were expecting to gleam some fairly unique behind-the-scenes information about how the biggest rock festival in the UK is run. What we weren’t expecting, however, was quite so much gossip as he was prepared to divulge – resulting in the longest Thrash Hits TV interview do date.

We also find out who he would Snog, Marry and Avoid out of his three main stage headliners this year, but that’s somewhat beside the point.
