Cult Cinema

Cult Cinema image provided by Last.fm Biography from Last.fm

Cult Cinema were formed in London during 2009 by Paul Hamlin (guitar), Ivan Ferreira (vocals), Nick Desmond (guitar), Noah Winterbourn (drums) and Trevor Saull (bass). Coming from the fringes of no scene in particular, they have felt no need to fit in, instead foolishly attempting to fuse the violence of thrash, punk and hardcore with the rawness of old school black metal and the off-kilter discordance of 90's noise rock and post-hardcore bands. Cult Cinema recently finished their debut EP Read more on Last.fm

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

With Bloodstock Open Air 2012 mere days away, Hugh invited Thrash Hits’ in-house black metal afficionado, Tom Dare, into the studio to break down who we think will be the big hits and misses of the UK’s trvest, kvltest, outdoor Summer festival. We also gave props out to Randy Blythe showing more class in his statement after being released from prison than 90% of the shoddy reporting surrounding his arrest, as well giving a break down of the four bands playing Thrash Hits Presents…no.3 at the Old Blue Last in November.

Thrash Hits presents… History Of The Hawk, Throne, Cult Cinema + Empress @ London Old Blue Last – 30 November 2012

August 2nd, 2012

It’s been a while since we’ve put on a gig so we figured we’d put the most exciting young bands that we’ve seen recently onto one bill. Headlining is awesome Midlands experimental hardcore quintet, History Of The Hawk. They’re supported by a London-based triumvirate of awesome: doom-mongers Throne will be getting heads banging before them while atmospheric black metallers Cult Cinema and brand new prog metallers Empress will be opening the night.

Coilguns promo 2012 Thrash Hits

When we interviewed Coilguns over Christmas, we ended up talking about raping a donkey. When we reviewed their new EP earlier this year, we ended up describing it as “[not] so much an EP as it is an exploding pressure valve”. And so when Coilguns came to London to play a show in a dark and cramped basement venue, we sent Hugh Platt along to experience the full fear this sideproject from The Ocean could cause.

CHARITY! Cult Cinema and FRONT are both at it. Give your money to good people

It’s February. If you’re a normal person you would’ve had a very austere January, contemplating the various sins you committed over the Christmas period. We just drank the pain away, obviously, but that’s not the point. Basically, you should’ve recovered from the toils of Christmas present purchases and bar tabs the size of three credit cards enough to have some cash left over to give to CHARITY. Luckily, Cult Cinema, Front magazine and even TH Editor, Raz are all making it easy for you to do so.

Opening track, ‘Akeldama’ doesn’t really hang around to do anything but leave a hefty impression. But what an impression. While the eerie opening builds and builds for the first 45 seconds, Cult Cinema pack in a whole load of discordant, furious anger into the remaining 45. It’s clear from that spacious opening that they’ve been taking their cues from the likes of Cult Of Luna and it’s no surprise to see that CoL man, Magnus Lindberg mixed and mastered this EP.

Thrash Hits Verdict:
We were rather impressed by the ferocious hardcore of Cult Cinema when we saw them at one of their first ever gigs in April so we thought we’d better ask them some stuff. This is what we said when they played at the Purple Turtle:

“It’s one of Cult Cinema’s first ever shows. It will not be one of their last. Death metal vocals with a hardcore/rock band really does work especially with the relentless intensity that they add to their live show. Who knew? They did, obviously. Snazzy name too. They’re ones to watch out for again. This may be largely due to the singer spending the whole set on the floor rather than on the stage but hey ho.”

Live: Pianos Become The Teeth @ London Camden Purple Turtle – 14 April 2011

This is the first time Baltimore, Maryland emotional hardcore quintet (that photo is clearly very old) have made their way across the drowning pool to the UK. It would’ve been rude to have ignored Pianos Become The Teeth‘s first gig in London, especially as their album, Old Pride was TH scribe Tomas Doyle’s second favourite album of 2010. Who knows? It might turn out to be a really good show. (It was bloody amazing, FYI.)
