Enslaved

Enslaved image provided by Last.fm Biography from Last.fm

Enslaved is a metal band from Bergen, Norway. Their style has changed over the years. Originally being an old-school black metal/viking metal act, they now perform a slightly more experimental and progressive form of black metal which has elements of 1970's progressive rock. The name was inspired by an Immortal demo track, Enslaved in Rot.

Enslaved was formed in 1991, by Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson. Joined by drummer Trym Torsson, they did their first demo in the summer of 1992. Read more on Last.fm

Sunday Slaylist: Let’s listen to some Viking Metal now that we’ve survived Ragnarok

February 23rd, 2014

Amon Amarth by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

Didn’t you hear? We all just survived Ragnarok. The latest instalment in the long line of ancient-cultures-predicting-the-end-of-the-world trend passed everyone by on Saturday night, and at no point did Fenrir eat the world, or Odin get into an almighty ruck with the Midgard Serpent. Ho hum.

And what better way to celebrate this ridiculous non-event than by listening to a load of Viking Metal? EXACTLY.

Album: Enslaved – RIITIIR

by Tom Dare

The perpetual evolution of Enslaved has established themselves as arguably the most accomplished band still going from that Norwegian rush of the early 90s. The sonic foci have changed over time but the quality has been hugely consistent, with the last four albums have seen them depart their black metal routes even further, and also enjoy their best run of creativity in their history. So they’re not going to screw things up with album twelve, are they?

Viking Metal and Christianity: A Most Misunderstood Relationship

March 8th, 2012

Amon Amarth Viking Metal Thrash Hits

David Keevill studied Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Cambridge. That means he knows his stuff when it comes to actual, really-real Vikings. Since both we and he are pedantic sorts, we browbeat him into writing an explanation as to on why anti-Christian imagery in Viking Metal is a horrible anachronism. Yeah, serious intellectual stuff! Bet you weren’t expecting that on Thrash Hits, right?

Sunday Slaylist: The New Black (Metal)

March 4th, 2012

Anaal Nathrakh UPDATED promo photo Thrash Hits

All this week, Tom Dare has been guiding you through how Black Metal has evolved over the course of the last two decades (check out parts one, two, three and four if you haven’t already). Now, as the week draws to a close, we’ve asked Tom to put together the songs that have made it happen into a Spotify Slaylist, and in doing to to lovingly cobble them together in an order that somehow tries to make sense of the wildly differing styles that constitute the genre these days. Wish him luck….

20 Years Of Black Metal Evolution – Part #2

February 28th, 2012

In this second part of his four-part feature into Black Metal’s sonic evolution over the last two decades, Tom Dare is setting his sights on two aspects of the genre’s evolution that almost seem to run counter to the musical tenets of its early years. Today he’s looking at how Black Metal has come to embrace both its proggier and more ambient sides….

Sunday Slaylist: IT SNOWED!!!111!!

February 5th, 2012

Guess The Snowy Album Cover? Thrash Hits

Look, we’re a bit tired, we’ve foolishly agreed to cook Sunday lunch today, and we still have to trudge down the shops to buy a big slab of meat to cook for it. With much of the UK currently under 2 inches of snow, can you blame us for going with an obvious topic this Sunday? That’s why we’ve gone for the bleedingly obvious choice of a Winter-themed Sunday Slaylist.

Live: Enslaved @ London Camden Underworld – 22 April 2011

April 28th, 2011

Having recently won their fourth consecutive Spellemannprisen for last year’s astounding Axioma Ethica Odini, Enslaved have firmly cemented their place at the very top of Norway’s musical exports alongside the likes of Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon and Immortal. We thought we’d head down to the Underworld to celebrate the Bank Holiday weekend in true (tr00/trve) Viking style.
