Epica formed in the Netherlands. They are a symphonic metal band, founded by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen, subsequent to his departure from After Forever. Their songs largely deal with philosophical topics, including science, religion and world events.

The horrendously lazy ‘female-fronted’ tag is a relic of a bygone era and its continued existence is an insult to anybody who believes in the progressive opportunities that metal often affords. Epica, a band central to the European symphonic metal scene over the last eleven years, have too been lumped with this description in their time, in addition to being grouped in with other bands who use classical aspects in their music. In both counts, and especially compounded in the release of their latest album, The Quantum Enigma, there is far more to this Dutch metal outfit than the reductive sum of just their vocals and symphonic elements.

Proving that heavy metal still has much further to go than it thinks in shedding its chauvinistic image, Epica have for some odd reason been clumped under that dreadful “female-fronted metal” definition. It’s a label so meaningless it geta applied to everyone from Nightwish to Arch Enemy. And it’s stopped Epica for getting credit as widely as they should for quite how distinct they are.

Look, we’re not sure why guys dressed as Darth Vader and Imperial Stormtroopers turn up at every fucking metal festival in the UK anymore – they just do. There were some at Hammerfest 2. Is Star Wars particularly metal? It’s not even that cool in a geek-way anymore – and yet another reason to give Jar Jar Binks the finger.
