Self Defense Family are a strange one. They’ve changed their name so many times you can never be sure what they’re actually called; they’re wildly prolific yet they’ve only managed three albums in 10 years; and despite the fact that they practically live on social media, their inane chatter and lack of a proper website means that Wikipedia remains the best way of keeping track of their discography.

Sunday Slaylist: Hevy Festival 2013 – what might’ve been…

August 4th, 2013

Hevy 2013 cancelled Thrash Hits

This weekend would’ve been the fifth Hevy Festival…but as you no doubt know by now, the festival was forced to cancel their event this year. They tried to schedule a replacement all-dayer at the Brixton Academy here in London, featuring some of the biggest bands on this year’s (cancelled) bill…but as you also know by now, they had to cancel that too.

It’s not been the best year for Hevy Festival, truth be told.

SXSW 2013: the best of the UK’s heavy music in Austin

March 6th, 2013

SXSW 2013 south by southwest 2013 thrash hits logo

South By Southwest is a wonderful place where Foo Fighters play on the patio of a bar and Kvelertak play five shows in three days and we see them all by dumb luck. While the big picture says SXSW is about bands for radio, the underground says it’s all about metal. That’s why the pizza shop on 6th St is called Hoek’s Death Metal Pizza and has a dozen metal bands playing in its backyard every day. There are also some excellent bands flying over to Austin from the UK. Here’s a rundown of the seven that we could find.

When influential Italian screamo-types, Raein, announced they would be playing their first UK shows for over six years, longterm fan Tom Doyle made sure he was one of the lucky few that crowded into the Old Blue Last to be reminded as to just why they’re such a big deal.

Six things we learnt when Raein (finally!) came back to London…

Who is the Best New Band of 2011?

December 19th, 2011

2011 end of year best new band thrash hits

We reckon we’re pretty good at finding new bands. Over the past few years we’ve championed Turbowolf, Bastions, Wolves Like Us and loads more before the rest cottoned on. That’s why you probably want to know what new bands we liked the most in 2011.

Maybe some of them will go on to become your favourite band of 2012. Maybe you already love them and this just reinforces the fact that you’re awesome. (If so, come and join us.) Just give the bands a listen. They’re worth it.

Live: The Tangled Tour @ London Hope & Anchor – 08 October 2011

Bastions 2011 promo photo 2 Thrash Hits

We’ve been talking up The Tangled Tour for aaagggeeesss. We’re big fans of every band that’s taking part, and we can’t remember the last time we could say that about a tour that’s got seven bands playing over the course of its run. We’re not the only ones to think so either – when we arrived at The Hope & Anchor last weekend, they were having to turn people away at the door….

Future Hits 091: Goodtime Boys

September 12th, 2011

Given that the Thrash Hits-sponsored Tangled Tour kicks off just one month from today, we figured it was about time we threw a spotlight on some of the acts taking part in this kickass tour. First up: Goodtime Boys

Goodtime Boys
From: Cardiff, UK
Lazy Equation: (The Nation Of Ulysses + Thursday) x Blood Brothers
URL: Facebook // Tumblr // Bandcamp

Thrash Hits Verdict:
When we first saw Goodtime Boys play live, we said their “spiky take on hardcore was sufficiently difficult to pigenohole that it will irritate the shit out of people that like their rock music easy to categorise”. Also, the band’s frontman, Alex Pennie, was wearing a pair of orange jeans. We stand by our assessment of Goodtime Boys music still, but we have no idea what happened to those orange jeans. We probably should’ve asked Alex when we caught up with last week….

Photos & Live: Bastions + Nitkowski + Goodtime Boys + Plague Riot In Moscow @ London Camden Unicorn – 11 May 2011

Bastions 2011 promo photo Thrash Hits

There are only a mere handful of bands that we never fail to see when they play live in London, and in case that bloody great big promo photo up above isn’t enough of a clue, Bastions are one of them. Seeing as this was the band’s final last jaunt around the UK before knuckling down to record their debut full-length, Hospital Corners, for damn sure we weren’t going to miss out on hearing some new material….  [Read more →]
