Vans Warped Tour UK @ London Alexandra Palace – 16-17 November 2013

November 27th, 2013

After he returned from his weekend at the UK’s version of Warped Tour, Gavin Lloyd requested special dispensation to write a 1400-word missive on his experience at Ally Pally with a few thousand other grebos. If you’re an emo, feel free to call this longform journalism. If you’re not… go and read a real website.

As a teenager I spent many summers flicking through music magazines in awe of the Warped Tour. It was always a dream of mine to head over to the States and take in this travelling punk rock circus in person. Alas, I never actually got to go and I watched as the Warped Tour evolved into something of a mismatched monster. While they’d still invite the likes of The Bouncing Souls along out of what I guess is a sense of respect, things were different. The internet gave birth to ‘crunkcore’ bands being booked and isanyoneup.com getting stalls in the merch village. Still, it’s not all bad, Katy Perry played one year. With that in mind, I welcomed the fact that Warped now comes to the UK’s shores and headed along to Alexandra Palace to check it out, obviously disappointed Katy Perry wasn’t present.

Sunday Slaylist: Hevy Festival 2013 – what might’ve been…

August 4th, 2013

Hevy 2013 cancelled Thrash Hits

This weekend would’ve been the fifth Hevy Festival…but as you no doubt know by now, the festival was forced to cancel their event this year. They tried to schedule a replacement all-dayer at the Brixton Academy here in London, featuring some of the biggest bands on this year’s (cancelled) bill…but as you also know by now, they had to cancel that too.

It’s not been the best year for Hevy Festival, truth be told.

Hatebreed at Bloodstock Open Air 2012 by Gary Wolstenholme Thrash Hits

Hatebreed are one of the most consistently excellent live bands around. They always have been and probably always will be so we headed down to the first properly sweaty gig of the year to see Jamey Jasta growling his way through some hardcore anthems.

Pre-gig meal: Chilango. Grilled chicken burrito with black beans, hot and mild salsa, lettuce. No cheese or sour cream, please.

6 things we learnt watching Hatebreed again…

It’s a question as old as Gandalf’s liver-spotted inner thigh, but one worth asking again; do Jamie Jasta and co. breed hate or are they themselves bred from the stuff? Either way you look at it, with the arrival of this, their seventh studio album and the advent of yet another record that you’d entirely expect from the fivepiece, you’re set to thinking; how many liberties can one band take with a name? More importantly, do we care enough to find out if The Divinity of Purpose can answer this question for us? Of course we do (but probably shouldn’t).

Before we get the ball rolling it has to be said I quite like a bit of Hatebreed. I can’t say that there is a perfect album end to end, but they sure do know how to make some floor-punching, dick-shrivelling stompers that are always accompanied by chest beating choruses. ‘Straight To Your Face’, ‘Doomsayer’, ‘This Is Now’ or ‘I Will Be Heard’ all result in my car going bat shit crazy with my crew slamming one another on the back seat.  But will this debut solo record from Jamey Jasta prove that there more to the man than a head scarf and a huge gob?
