DUR DUR DUR DUR DUR, DUR DUR DUR DUR DUR – it’s Hatebreed returning to the main stage at Bloodstock Open Air 2014.

There’s less than a week to go until the Midlands once again plays host to the UK’s biggest outdoor unabashed metal festival. Make no mistake – Bloodstock Open Air carries no caveats about being a “rock” festival. It is about being the heaviest fully-camping festival the UK has to offer, and their 2014 line-up – stuffed to the guts with death, black, and extreme metal – sets the festival apart from the larger Download and Sonisphere Festivals. That’s not a bad thing – a little variety goes a long way in the saturated UK festival market – so naturally this week’s Sunday Spotify Slaylist is all about the Bloodstock 2014 line-up.

After he returned from his weekend at the UK’s version of Warped Tour, Gavin Lloyd requested special dispensation to write a 1400-word missive on his experience at Ally Pally with a few thousand other grebos. If you’re an emo, feel free to call this longform journalism. If you’re not… go and read a real website.
As a teenager I spent many summers flicking through music magazines in awe of the Warped Tour. It was always a dream of mine to head over to the States and take in this travelling punk rock circus in person. Alas, I never actually got to go and I watched as the Warped Tour evolved into something of a mismatched monster. While they’d still invite the likes of The Bouncing Souls along out of what I guess is a sense of respect, things were different. The internet gave birth to ‘crunkcore’ bands being booked and isanyoneup.com getting stalls in the merch village. Still, it’s not all bad, Katy Perry played one year. With that in mind, I welcomed the fact that Warped now comes to the UK’s shores and headed along to Alexandra Palace to check it out, obviously disappointed Katy Perry wasn’t present.

This weekend would’ve been the fifth Hevy Festival…but as you no doubt know by now, the festival was forced to cancel their event this year. They tried to schedule a replacement all-dayer at the Brixton Academy here in London, featuring some of the biggest bands on this year’s (cancelled) bill…but as you also know by now, they had to cancel that too.
It’s not been the best year for Hevy Festival, truth be told.

We’re back to normal podcasts now, and this week Hugh is joined by Tom Doyle to talk about just what it is behind controversial – but not necessarily “metal” – news stories that gets metal musicians, the metal media, and metal fans so worked up. Come listen to Tom Doyle’s well thought out points, and marvel at the arrogance and irony of Hugh decrying sensationalist media using unrelated news stories to sell copies/get site hits, when we’re pretty much doing exactly that with this podcast.

Ronseal headline does what it says on the tin – it’s been confirmed today that Hevy 2013 won’t be festival in the camping-outside-stages-in-a-field way at all, but rather will take the form of a series of gigs taking place in and around London.

Hatebreed are one of the most consistently excellent live bands around. They always have been and probably always will be so we headed down to the first properly sweaty gig of the year to see Jamey Jasta growling his way through some hardcore anthems.
Pre-gig meal: Chilango. Grilled chicken burrito with black beans, hot and mild salsa, lettuce. No cheese or sour cream, please.
6 things we learnt watching Hatebreed again…
