After their brief but well-deserved Winter hibernation, we’ve finally gotten round to poking our columnists back to consciousness and then to their keyboards so they can bang out some more monthly missives for us on their respective corners of the rock and metal pantheon. First up is David Keevill, who returns with to take a long hard look at what’s been going on in Prog so far this year…

There are well over 250 bands performing over the August Bank Holiday weekend in both Reading and Leeds with dozens of comedians and DJs on top. Another EP, yet another way for Hawk Eyes to prove that the biggest melodic hooks don’t necessarily come in the most obvious packages. Reading & Leeds Festival 2013 Thrash Hits

With the August Bank Holiday weekend rapidly approaching, Reading & Leeds Festivals are once again upon us. As with every year, Reading & Leeds have a bit fat dollop of heaviness in among the landfill indie, so for this week’s Sunday Slaylist we’ve put together a Spotify playlist of the hardest and heaviest from their 2013 line-ups.

SXSW 2013: the best of the UK’s heavy music in Austin

South By Southwest is a wonderful place where Foo Fighters play on the patio of a bar and Kvelertak play five shows in three days and we see them all by dumb luck. While the big picture says SXSW is about bands for radio, the underground says it’s all about metal. That’s why the pizza shop on 6th St is called Hoek’s Death Metal Pizza and has a dozen metal bands playing in its backyard every day. There are also some excellent bands flying over to Austin from the UK. Here’s a rundown of the seven that we could find.

Damnation Festival 2012 Thrash Hits

Earlier this week, Damnation Festival announced Hawk Eyes, Ravens Creed and The Atrocity Exhibit as the final three bands for their 2012 line-up, and my, what a killer line-up it is too. Headed up by Dorset doom overlords, Electric Wizard, this year’s Damnation Festival also sees Pig Destroyer make their first return to the UK in eight years – why the hell haven’t you bought a ticket already? If you have bought a ticket already: well done. You know the score.
