In case you missed the news earlier this week, we’re teaming up with Songkick Detour to try to bring some of the best bands in the world to London. Some of them have split up (but occasionally threaten to get back together), some of them have reformed but just not made the trip over to the UK yet, and some of them have never been to these shores. This week’s Sunday Spotify Slaylist will hopefully remind you why you need to pledge to see these bands.
I Am Heresy
What happens when your band falls apart and everything you worked toward is abruptly thrown away? You start a new one! That is exactly what Nathan Gray (boysetsfire, The Casting Out) decided to do once his last musical effort The Casting Out ceased to exist. Not one to sit around and cry about the situation, he decided to move forward and form something completely new. He didn't have to look far though, realizing that his son Simon Gray and fellow bandmate Jonah Latshaw (May 4th Massacre) both were very talented musicians in their own right Read more on Last.fm

We saw the power of Songkick Detour back in February when, in conjunction with our big sister, DrownedinSound, Desaparecidos played their first UK show. It was impressive and it was powered by the crowd. They wanted to see Desaparecidos play live in London and they put their money where their mouths were. We want to do the same thing with some bands that we like.

Lazy equation: A pissed off Tom Waits + Sleazy Rock N Roll + serious bitterness towards exs (+ Ugly Kid Joe) = Violently styled lyrics over steamy, down-tempo riffs.

Thrash Hits Verdict: We’ve got one EP of all but four songs to go by, and they’re all winners. HOORAY! As dark and disturbing as the tunes can get, there is also a shameless, exaggerated air to the music and the band itself. I mean, the band’s press photo consists of five pale shirtless dudes slathered in baby oil. In this day and age new bands have to whore themselves out a bit for attention, though, right?

I Am Heresy
From: Delaware/Maryland/New Jersey, United States
Lazy equation: Angry dads + Their angry kids = Tech Metal + Hardcore
Thrash Hits Verdict: Boysetsfire teases us with a reunion tour, even playing at Reading Festival 2011 and retreat back to the ether. The Casting Out calls it a day shortly after signing to Eyeball Records, Chambers unleash but one album, discharge their vocalist, and fizzle out. What does this mean? It means a bunch of dudes with jack shit to do.
Thankfully, this group of men (and boys) managed to reach out and touch one another to bring us a head-on collision of Boysetsfire and Chambers. It’s heavy metal enjoined with the youthful vigor of Nathan Gray’s own 17-year-old son, Simon, and BSF band mate, Josh Latshaw’s son, Jonah.
So far, we’ve been offered two tracks (download them below) ahead of an upcoming album on Magic Bullet Records. The music is certainly rooted in traditional metal and hardcore, but the twisted wreckage of bands gone past gives us a fusion worthy of original praise. We speak to Nathan Gray about his new project…
