It’s just a few short weeks away now – Damnation Festival 2013 is (once again) going to be the heavy music event of the Winter here in the UK. We’re going to be heading up to Leeds University in force come 02 November, but until then, we’ve put together a Sunday Spotify Slaylist to hype us up for what’s (once again) one of the best one-dayer metal fest line-ups the UK has ever seen.
Iron Witch are a Sludge Metal band from Liverpool, England who formed in early 2010. Their mix of 'whiskey soaked', bluesy riffs, throat scorched vocals and hardcore punk, tip the hat to the likes of Eyehategod, Black Sabbath and Black Flag.
They released their debut EP entitled 'Single Malt' in early August 2011 through Witch Hunter Records, and have recently released a 7" entitled 'Post Vegas Blues' via Thirty Days Of Night Records.

Iron Witch on Thrash Hits

In our ongoing mission to shout about some of our favourite-but-unappreciated labels in the UK, it was inevitable that our wandering eye would end up focussing on Nottingham. While also the birthplace of Earache Records, it’s certainly not the only label dealing in heavy music that has its roots in the city – one other being Witch Hunter Records. Several of our past Future Hits subjects – including Limb, End Reign, and Prelude To The Hunt – have had releases on the label, which specialises in the kind of nasty underground sludge, doom and hardcore that we like best, so it was inevitable we’d end up getting in contact with the label founder, Chris Kaye, to get the inside scoop on his gloriously nasty little label.

With all the brouhaha regarding summer outdoor festivals, we somewhat neglected a springtime indoor one that’s taking place on our very doorstep – DesertFest. Today is the third and final day of the first London incarnation of the festival, where more than 50 stoner, doom, spacerock and sludge bands have been giving the foundations of Camden Town a solid shake-up. If – like us – you had to miss this year’s festival, you can at least console yourself with the Spotify Slaylist we’ve made in the festival’s honour.

Our good friends, When Planets Collide, are putting on their first show of 2012 tomorrow night, and boy, have they cranked up a killer line-up to blast away any remaining post-Xmas malaise you might still be feeling. Slabdragger, Iron Witch, Gouranga, Steak, XII Boar, Sea Bastard and Wiht will be dealing out stoner / doom / sludge / evil noise from 7pm at the Brixton Windmill, all for the satisfyingly budget-price cost of just £6 a ticket.
What else could you possibly be doing tomorrow night that gives you that much bang for that little buck? Don’t be THAT guy. Y’know, the loser who stayed at home to watch Casualty. Come out and CRUSH.
