The future of British rock and metal festivals

April 1st, 2014

With Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, Faith No More, Motörhead and Soulfly (and Wolfmother…) set to fill the main stage of a day at British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park this July, it struck Raziq Rauf that the same bill could easily have been announced in 2000 to the same fanfare. What has (or has not) happened in the last 14 years for this to be the case and what does the future have in store?

What is the future of music festivals? I’m not talking 2015 (because 2014’s summer season lineup is just about fully lined up), I’m talking about something more like 2025. What is going to happen to our music festivals in the next ten years? Will Metallica still be headlining on a rota with Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Linkin Park? The classic rockers like Aerosmith, Def Leppard and Black Sabbath have a shelf-life. Are Avenged Sevenfold or Rammstein the answer? While they sell out arenas in London and that simply translates to headlining Donington or Knebworth, neither have ever had quite the same impact as those first mentioned few and they likely never will.

2013 AOTY Thrash Hits Albums of the Year

Like any artform, music is not a competition. There is only good and bad music and that categorisation in itself is all down to subjective taste. However, in a bid for scientific rigour; some quantitative analysis to fortify the qualitative spiels, we’ve asked all the Thrash Hits contributors to list their favourite albums of 2013. Yeah, it’s here to boost our egos by claiming what we say is best and it’ll surely get some good clicks and you may (rightly) point out that it’s just another list but, at the very least, you might see an album that you’ve never heard of and think about buying it. That would be cool.

Everyone loves TV, don’t they? They do. Sports are great, soap operas are staple Antipodean exports and the news is a depressing tirade of war and famine, but with politics and innuendo hidden deep within their bite-sized storylines, are television series. You get boxsets and live-tweeting, comedy and drama, but everyone’s got a favourite type. Kvelertak spent the best part of three years touring their debut album around the world. As such, they had a lot of spare time on their hands, so they watched a lot of TV. Here are their favourite shows.

Ahead of the release of their second album, Meir, Norwegian blackened party punk rock ‘n’ rollers, Kvelertak had a day of hanging about in London talking to relative strangers about that album. February 15th, 2013

Thrash Hits Podcast 1

This week Hugh and Tom Dare sit down to tackle the subject of Britishness in metal, taking care to avoid going on about tedious, tub-thumping, nationalist nonsense, and instead concentrating on some of the more unusual quirks and trends that Britishness has inadvertantly lent to British rock and metal over the years – how it affects not just how bands sound, but how we think about bands, and even how we come to cover certain bands at all in the first place.
