Kyuss Lives! is the most recent incarnation of the influential stoner rock band Kyuss,

The original line up disbanded in late 1995, with members all going on to form new bands. Throughout the rest of 2010, Garcia Plays Kyuss continued to play shows across the globe, featuring Kyuss members Nick Oliveri and Brant Bjork. In November 2010 Read more on Last.fm

Kyuss Lives! is one of those projects that has been divisive right from the off – something we’ve made no bones about here at Thrash Hits. Despite inital reports that he was okay with the project, things got even more controversial back in March, when Josh Homme, former guitarist with Kyuss, filed a lawsuit alleging trademark infringement, misrepresentation, and a whole heap else besides. We caught up with Brant Bjork (that’s him in the hat up above), the band’s drummer and principle Kyuss songwriter after Homme, to talk about what’s really going on both in – and out – of the courtroom when it comes to all things Kyuss.

Kyuss Lives!…but for how much longer? Josh Homme files lawsuit against former bandmates

March 10th, 2012

Uh-oh. Remember when John Garcia and Brant Bjork announced their plans to tour the world under the Kyuss Lives! moniker, playing songs written when they were both members of Kyuss? They even recruited Nick Oliveri on bass (until he, err, decided to take on an LA SWAT team in that is) on bass to make it seem even more legit.

Well, news has arisen today that Josh Homme, the only absentee member of the classic Kyuss line-up not included in Kyuss Lives!, and Scott Reeder, the Kyuss bassst who KL! recruited after Nick Oliveri…err…decided to pick a fight with an entire LA SWAT team, have filed a lawsuit against their former Kyuss bandmates alleging trademark infringement, misrepresentation, and a whole heap else besides. Oo-er!

When the Kyuss Lives! dates were announced last year, you may remember we looked at reasons for and against such a legendary band reforming without one key member. Obviously the resounding success of last year’s ‘Garcia Plays Kyuss’ tour was enough to tempt Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri back into the ranks. In retrospect it seems most that were against were those who caught the original incarnation of the band and didn’t want their memories tarnished. That didn’t stop most of the Kyuss Lives! dates selling out and us going out for not one, but two nights of stoner mastery.

Kyuss are back (but without Josh Homme): The Argument AGAINST

November 3rd, 2010

Our ih-house surly bastard, Hugh Platt, greeted the news that “Kyuss” were reforming by sighing too much, and pulling a face that makes Droopy look happy. What exactly is his problem with ‘Kyuss Lives!’…?

Sorry, but this ain’t Kyuss. Not even close.

Sure, click over to the band’s Wikipedia page, scrool down and Lo! John Garcia, Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri are among the list of former members of Kyuss. And that’s three out of four roles filled, right? By anyone’s estimation, 75% of a band’s line-up can be counted as legit, right? Right?!??

Kyuss are back (but without Josh Homme): The Argument FOR

November 3rd, 2010

Back in July, Amit Sharma returned to us like a stoner with ten coffees in him. The reason? He’d just hung out with his hero, John Garcia at his London show. Kyuss reformed this week, minus Josh Homme. Words ensued…

You may have heard that “Kyuss” are reforming for some European dates in Spring next year. After witnessing the immensity of the Garcia Plays Kyuss tour back in July, I think these reunion shows have the potential to be life changing, particularly for anyone that wasn’t lucky (or old) enough to catch them back in the day.

Except… hang on a minute! The artist performing isn’t being billed as Kyuss but actually under the moniker of ‘Kyuss Lives. What does that mean? Do we get to see the band or not?
