Metallica are headlining the Sunday evening of Sonisphere Festival 2014 so Raziq Rauf took a few minutes to talk to festival booker, Alan Day about the metal legends, the cancelled event of 2012 and what to look out for at Knebworth this year. You can also WIN a pair of Sonisphere tickets and a goody bag. Decent.

The future of British rock and metal festivals

April 1st, 2014

With Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, Faith No More, Motörhead and Soulfly (and Wolfmother…) set to fill the main stage of a day at British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park this July, it struck Raziq Rauf that the same bill could easily have been announced in 2000 to the same fanfare. What has (or has not) happened in the last 14 years for this to be the case and what does the future have in store?

What is the future of music festivals? I’m not talking 2015 (because 2014’s summer season lineup is just about fully lined up), I’m talking about something more like 2025. What is going to happen to our music festivals in the next ten years? Will Metallica still be headlining on a rota with Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Linkin Park? The classic rockers like Aerosmith, Def Leppard and Black Sabbath have a shelf-life. Are Avenged Sevenfold or Rammstein the answer? While they sell out arenas in London and that simply translates to headlining Donington or Knebworth, neither have ever had quite the same impact as those first mentioned few and they likely never will.

Zebrahead and the art of advertising “self-love” aids: Adam Graham from FACT is our man in Japan

October 15th, 2013

Here’s the second column from Adam Graham – the “token white guy” (his words, not ours) in Japanese mosh heroes, FACT. For content, our man in Japan is still banking on Japan being weirder than what you’re used to. It appears to be working. We’re hopeful of plenty more too…

Japan’s a funny old country. I don’t mean this in a sneering, xenophobic, “Oh, look at the silly foreigners,” kind of way – I am extremely fortunate to live here and enjoy the hospitality of the country and its people. What I mean is that from a completely objective standpoint a lot of things go down here that seem to teeter on the edge of sanity.

I’m talking Pepsi-flavoured Cheetos and nightmare-inducing “cute” mascots (can you guess what this fella is selling?!). Oh and hey, you’re worried about a little bit of horsemeat finding its way into your hamburger? What about if it found its way into your ice cream? ON PURPOSE.

Chris Hemsworth AKA Thor is a metalhead

August 29th, 2013

In a new interview featured in the US edition of Esquire magazine, it has transpired that Hollywood’s Thor, Chris Hemsworth is a metalhead. He beats the crap out of his mate whilst listening to Pantera. Strong.

It’s Saturday, so Hemsworth boxes. In his garage. With his best friend from high school. Music — Pantera — throbbing through speakers. The guy is suited up in a bright yellow foam suit and helmet, calling out the shots — jab, jab, hook, uppercut. Hemsworth hits hard enough to hurt the trainer, even with the protective gear. Every now and then he throws in a side kick for good measure. He could do this all day. It’s Saturday, so he might lift afterwards. Then spar with his wife. Maybe surf a little at dusk. He can do whatever he wants.

Why can’t metal fans spell their favourite bands correctly?

Pulling people up on their spelling is a dick move – we get people referring to us as ‘Trash Hits’ all the time, after all – but Heavy Metal is a religion to almost 41,000 people and, as such, ought to be taken very, very seriously. That’s why, while trawling Facebook for some rubbish about Megadeth’s new album using our stupid, massive sausage fingers, we came across something that blew our puny minds. That led us to do some keyboard-oriented experimenting.

Warning: None of the below is cool. No.

Metallica! Family! The Hetfields get photobombed by The Rock

April 29th, 2013

It may have just been last June when James Hetfield stood in front of 80,000 people at Download Festival 2012 and called out to his Metallica family over and over, but here’s a photo of James Hetfield with his Hetfield family.

It’s over a year old, having been taken at the Hollywood premiere for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, but the accidental photobomb by The Rock is just exceptional.

Also: Cute family, Jaymz.

Sunday Slaylist: Cliff Burton (February 10, 1962 – September 27, 1986)

Cliff Burton (February 10, 1962 – September 27, 1986)

The list of individuals in the world of metal that fans unequivocally agree on the importance, talent, and legacy of is very small indeed. Even figures in the biggest, most influential bands can be divisive figures – and none more so than Metallica. That’s just one of the many things that makes the band’s former bassist, the late Cliff Burton, such an extraordinary figure – perhaps no bassist in the history of metal is so universally agreed upon as not just a master of his instrument, but a full on innovator of its use in metal. That’s why today, on what would’ve been the bassist’s 51st birthday, our Sunday Spotify Slaylist is dedicated to Cliff Burton.
