Metsatöll, an Estonian folk metal band, was formed in 1999 in Tallinn by Markus Teeäär (vocals), Silver “Factor” Rattasepp (drums) and Andrus Tins (bass), playing epic heavy metal with a great influence from ancient Estonian folklore. The debut album called "Terast mis hangund me hinge" (Steel Frozen in Our Souls) was released at that time.

In 2000, a good friend Lauri "Varulven" Õunapuu joined the band. Until then, he had observed the activities of the band with a broad smile and had, from time to time, joined them on stage. Read more on Last.fm

When people talk about folk metal, they are often talking about metal with a bit of a rustic tinge. The odd flute trill, maybe a violin, some jaunty riffs on the electric guitars – very much more metal than folk. Even the tr00est of the tr00 catch a ride on a bandwagon from time to time.

Spinefarm Records are more metal than you. Hell, they’re even more metal than Thrash Hits – and that’s not something we give away lightly – so when they asked us if we wanted to go to Helsinki, Finland and then get on a boat and watch loads of heavy metal, we accepted.

It really shouldn’t be a good idea to put 1,500 heavy metallers, eight bands and millions of gallons of booze and Thrash Hits on a ten-deck ferry and then set sail across the Baltic Sea for Tallinn, Estonia but it worked for us.
