Mr. Big combined two popular musical trends of the rock scene in the mid to late 80s: a particular brand of hard rock focused on melodies and listener-friendly choruses made for the arena, and impressive technical proficiency, then called shredding. The seeds for the group were sown when bass player Billy Sheehan (considered one of the top bassists of rock, often thought to be the bass equivalent of guitarist Eddie Van Halen) left David Lee Roth's solo band in 1988. Following their storming set at Download Festival in June, virtuoso supergroup Mr. Big are back to promote their seventh studio album What If… with a full UK tour. We like fast guitars and massive choruses, so headed down to Shepherd’s Bush Empire to watch the best band ever to share a name with a Sex And The City character. Not that we know much about the show or own the box set or anything.

A decade on from their last studio release, ’80s supergroup Mr. Big return with their comeback album What If… featuring the original line up. Reactions to the 2009 reunion tour were overwhelmingly positive, with the band even releasing a Best Of and a Live DVD. Now, having been included on the latest announcement for Download Festival 2011, could this be the year Mr. Big revisit the success they had two decades ago?
