My Dying Bride

My Dying Bride is a doom metal band formed in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, UK. They are known for their slow yet extremely heavy riffs and remarkably morose poetic lyrics. Along with former Peaceville labelmates Anathema and Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride is one of the pioneering acts of the death doom metal movement in the early 1990s.

The initial formation consisted of vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe, guitarists Andrew Craighan and Calvin Robertshaw plus drummer Rick Miah, who founded the band in 1990. Read more on Last.fm

by Daniel Cairns

Whilst peers like Paradise Lost and Anathema have gone through a litany of musical changes, experimenting with Depeche Mode style electronics and glorious anthemic rock songs, My Dying Bride have mercifully continued to wallow in their Keats-meets-Castlevania misery, writing melodic dirges for those moments at four in the morning when you’re not miserable enough for Khanate, but still feel a bit naff anyway.

My Dying Bride at Damnation Festival 2012 by Emma Stone Thrash Hits

According to our reviewer, Dan Cairns, at Damnation Festival 2012, My Dying Bride were “insanely daft and overwrought on record and that translates pretty well live, newly coiffured singer Aaron Stainthorpe gesticulating a bit like Father Dick Byrne from the Eurovision episode of Father Ted.” What else did Dan have to say?

Damnation Festival 2012 Thrash Hits

Earlier this week, Damnation Festival announced Hawk Eyes, Ravens Creed and The Atrocity Exhibit as the final three bands for their 2012 line-up, and my, what a killer line-up it is too. Headed up by Dorset doom overlords, Electric Wizard, this year’s Damnation Festival also sees Pig Destroyer make their first return to the UK in eight years – why the hell haven’t you bought a ticket already? If you have bought a ticket already: well done. You know the score.

Vallenfyre (in shadow) Thrash Hits

Last week, one of the many, many press releases that was emailed over to us here at Thrash Hits was an announcement from Century Media that they’d signed a death metal band called Vallenfyre. “So far, so what?”, right? We clicked on the link they gave us to the band’s website, cast a cursory glance at the band’s moody’n’shadowy promo pic, before nodding in appreciation at Vallenfyre’s dirty, crusty rumble. And then we moved on to the next of the 2463 unread emails currently filling up our inbox.

Then last night, Century Media – who’d clearly been bouncing up and down for the last week, biting down on their knuckles, silently humming “I know something you don’t know!” – blurted out the truth they’d been sitting on since their first announcement: “HEY GUYS, IT’S REALLY A SUPERGROUP MADE UP OF GUYS FROM PARADISE LOST, AT THE GATES, AND MY DYING BRIDE? HOW’D YOU LIKE THEM NOW, HUH?”

Peaceville Sunday Spotify Slaylist Thrash Hits

After a couple of weeks absence, our Sunday Spotify Slaylists are back – we’re resuming our series of label tributes with another British indie label, Peaceville Records. Although the label was founded as an outlet for crust-punk, it was with the gloomy atmospheric doom-stylings of Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema that the label found its true identity.
