The future of British rock and metal festivals

April 1st, 2014

With Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, Faith No More, Motörhead and Soulfly (and Wolfmother…) set to fill the main stage of a day at British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park this July, it struck Raziq Rauf that the same bill could easily have been announced in 2000 to the same fanfare. What has (or has not) happened in the last 14 years for this to be the case and what does the future have in store?

What is the future of music festivals? I’m not talking 2015 (because 2014’s summer season lineup is just about fully lined up), I’m talking about something more like 2025. What is going to happen to our music festivals in the next ten years? Will Metallica still be headlining on a rota with Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Linkin Park? The classic rockers like Aerosmith, Def Leppard and Black Sabbath have a shelf-life. Are Avenged Sevenfold or Rammstein the answer? While they sell out arenas in London and that simply translates to headlining Donington or Knebworth, neither have ever had quite the same impact as those first mentioned few and they likely never will.

Temples Festival 2014 Slaylist Thrash Hits

This week, the magnificent Temples Festival sold out of weekend tickets. For a new festival to do this in their opening year is pretty damn impressive, and speaks volumes for just how strong Temples Festival’s line-up curation has been. It also makes for a goddamn murderously good Sunday Slaylist.

Scott Kelly’s experiments with acoustic might see him take a different sonic route from his work as the lynchpin of Neurosis, but it very much sees him exploring the same avenues of dark misery as his day job. Hugh Platt crept up to Camden for an altogether different kind of gloom.

Six things we learned when Scott Kelly played the Black Heart: [Read more →]

Album number ten, five years since the last one. Screw any more extraneous preamble: here’s why you need Neurosis in your life. [Read more →]

Sunday Slaylist: A crash course in Neurosis

September 23rd, 2012

Neurosis 2012 promo photo Thrash Hits

A lot of new music has been getting us excited recently – in the past weeks, new music has emerged from the likes of Converge, Deftones and Pig Destroyer to name b but three – but nothing has gotten us quite so excited as the new Neurosis track that the band released into the wilds of the world wide web this week. Not only is ‘At the Well’ an killer appetiser for Honor Found in Decay, but it sent us spiralling back through Neurosis’ extensive back catalogue, to remind ourselves just why a) this gaggle of Californians are so important, and b) just why we love them so damn much.

Hydra Head Records R.I.P 2 Thrash Hits

As we reported on Tuesday, Hydra Heads Records bossman Aaron Turner announced this week that the label was to effectively close, with the label to transform little more than an administrative arm for the label’s existing catalogue before the year is out.
