1) Nile is a Technical Death Metal band from USA. They formed in their hometown of Greenville, SC, in 1993. They combine extreme speed and brutality of modern death metal with the ancient styling of Middle Eastern music.

Nile’s ability to meld extreme technicality with expressive and forward-thinking metal is why the music they’ve delivered over the best part of twenty years has been consistently interesting. Yet whilst they’ve maintained such a distinctive and identifiable sound, they’ve departed very little from a musical core that has, admittedly, served them very well throughout their career. Bloodstock Open Air 2012 adds Nile and Mayhem as UK festival exclusives

Bloodstock Open Air has added Ancient Egypt-obsessed death metallers, Nile, and historically-extremely-important-although-not-really-as-good-as-they-used-to-be black metallers, Mayhem, to its 2012 line-up. And…errr…that’s about it. Both bands are making their Bloodstock debuts, and both bands are going to be UK festival exclusives for Bloodstock this year, but then again we doubt there were many other festivals fighting to be first ones to knock either band’s booking agent’s doors.

If Morbid Angel, Death, Obituary and Deicide are the ‘Big Four’ of death metal, it’d be nice to think that Nile are like the Machine Heads of that sub-genre. Sounds weird but think about – strong influences from the ’80s movement but also very popular for bringing something different to the table, eg. more blast beats, Ancient Egyptian mysticism. With all the political upheaval in Egypt over the past few weeks, we thought it’d be a great time to go and catch some Middle Eastern-flavoured death metal.
