Orphaned Land is a doom/death band at its core, but they are highly influenced by the folk music and tradition of the Oriental Jews (Mizraḥim), making their sound much more progressive than typical doom/death bands. There’s less than a week to go until the Midlands once again plays host to the UK’s biggest outdoor unabashed metal festival. Make no mistake – Bloodstock Open Air carries no caveats about being a “rock” festival. It is about being the heaviest fully-camping festival the UK has to offer, and their 2014 line-up – stuffed to the guts with death, black, and extreme metal – sets the festival apart from the larger Download and Sonisphere Festivals. That’s not a bad thing – a little variety goes a long way in the saturated UK festival market – so naturally this week’s Sunday Spotify Slaylist is all about the Bloodstock 2014 line-up.

Writing about Orphaned Land and not mentioning the Palestine-sized elephant in the room is near-impossible. The Arab-Israeli conflict and the murky, tumultuous politics that have followed Zionism into the twenty-first century has coloured everything that the Israeli progressive metallers have written over the last twenty years. The devastating, seemingly irreparable, culture splits that have been right in front of them their entire lives pervades their music entirely, from the lyrics and themes through to their eccentric mixture of musical styles.
