Primordial

Primordial is a folk metal / pagan black metal band founded in 1987 in Skerries, County Dublin, Ireland. They play a unique style of pagan metal, which can best be described as a blend of black and celtic folk metal with strong influences from their Irish roots. Their lyrics deal with cultural heritage, history and struggle.

Primordial started out as a black metal band with some folk influences with their 1993 demo "Dark Romanticism" and 1995 debut album "Imrama". Read more on Last.fm

It is impossible to discuss Primordial without talking about the music’s emotion as much as the music itself. Pride, grief, rage; these things meld into each other and every note, giving the band a resonance and sincerity that politicians and Christmas adverts alike would kill for. Where Greater Men Have Fallen is very much in the same vein as its predecessors, and for a band of Primordial’s consistency, that can only be a good thing.

Bloodstock Open Air 2014 Sunday Slaylist Thrash Hits

There’s less than a week to go until the Midlands once again plays host to the UK’s biggest outdoor unabashed metal festival. Make no mistake – Bloodstock Open Air carries no caveats about being a “rock” festival. It is about being the heaviest fully-camping festival the UK has to offer, and their 2014 line-up – stuffed to the guts with death, black, and extreme metal – sets the festival apart from the larger Download and Sonisphere Festivals. That’s not a bad thing – a little variety goes a long way in the saturated UK festival market – so naturally this week’s Sunday Spotify Slaylist is all about the Bloodstock 2014 line-up.

We’ve got a fairly loose system when it comes to organising submissions from our contributors. They email us an idea, we tell them if it’s good or rubbish, then they go off and write it. Nice and simple. So when Tom Dare emailed us with a pitch for a retrospective on how Black Metal has evolved in the twenty years since the release of Darkthrone’s A Blaze In The Northern Sky, we just let him get on with it.

We just didn’t reckon he’s write quite so bloody much.

Damnation Festival 2012 Thrash Hits

Earlier this week, Damnation Festival announced Hawk Eyes, Ravens Creed and The Atrocity Exhibit as the final three bands for their 2012 line-up, and my, what a killer line-up it is too. Headed up by Dorset doom overlords, Electric Wizard, this year’s Damnation Festival also sees Pig Destroyer make their first return to the UK in eight years – why the hell haven’t you bought a ticket already? If you have bought a ticket already: well done. You know the score.
