Thrash Hits

Testament is one of the first thrash metal bands to emerge from the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1980s. Originally formed as 'Legacy' in 1983 by founding members Eric Peterson (rhythm guitar), Derrick Ramirez (guitar) and Louie Clemente (drums), the line-up included vocalist Steve Souza and Greg Christian (bass). Ramirez was later replaced by wunderkind Alex Skolnick (lead guitar). Souza soon departed to join Exodus and suggested that the towering Chuck Billy take over as frontman. Read more on

The problem with achieving brilliance is the weight of expectation that becomes attached to subsequent works. For Testament, having pulled off the ultimate achievement last time out – effectively having split up, an irreplaceable member battling serious illness, but still returning with the most ball-drainingly superb album of a 25 year career in the form of The Formation of Damnation – then that weight threatens to become unreasonable when it comes to the follow-up: Dark Roots Of Earth.

Bloodstock Open Air 2012 adds Testament as a UK exclusive.

February 15th, 2012

Bloodstock Open Air have confirmed that Testament – one of the most criminally-overlooked thrash bands, in our opinion – will be playing their only UK show of 2012 as part of the Bloodstock bill. And while we’ve lightly mocked some of the “UK EXCLUSIVE!!11!!” claims thrown around by festivals with this year’s bookings, bagging sole possession of Testament is definitely a big win in Bloodstock’s favour.

Live + Photos: Testament @ Shepherds Bush Empire – 24 July 2009

Can you think of a better way to spend a Friday night than watching Testament carve a West London venue into bloody chunks? No, you can’t. If you think you can, you’re wrong. Or you’re lying.

If Chuck Billy wasn’t in Testament, he’d be their number 1 fan. Almost as soon as Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson have taken up the foot-on-monitor poses for the start of ‘The Preacher’, Chuck Billy is air-guitaring his half-size mic stand like an 8 year-old who’s just discovered this thing called ‘metal’ for the first time, and can’t wait to tell all his friends.

Bay Area thrash heavyweights, Testament, have released a video for their rollicking beast of a track, ‘More Than Meets The Eye’. No, they’re not writing songs about Transformers – it’s about overcoming your inner demons and stuff.

You can tell it is “well metal” as the video has people being struck by lightning, demon creatures underneath Testament’s skin, and a volcano exploding. THAT’S METAL.
